Forums - Gaming - Who are your top three devs of this generation and why?

Bethesda - Fallout 3 and Oblivion were top notch WRPGs and I'm sure ES:V won't dissapoint.
Epic - Gears brought me back to TPS. Thank you !!!!
Mistwalker - Lost Odyssey = awesome, Blue Dragon = even more awesome

Runner Up:

Insomniac - I really liked Resistance and Resistance 2 is my 4th favourite FPS of this gen (behind CoD4, Halo 3, Bioshock). R&C is okay.

Wow I just answered this in another thread, I'll say it again:

Insomniac - They come out with one amazing (85+) game each year. First Resistance in 2006, Ratchet & Clank in 2007, Resistance 2 in 2008, and theres another Ratchet & Clank scheduled for 2009.

Naughty Dog - Uncharted is an amazing series. I've supported these guys since Crash Bandicoot on the PS.

Bethesda - I'd never heard of these guys until I played Oblivion and now I know they're amazing. Fallout 3 is genius and deserves the title of GOTY 2008.

Geurilla Games - They took a lot of guff when they released Killzone which got average reviews after massive hype. They made Killzone Liberation on PSP which is good, but not great. And then they took even more grief when they put out the E3 2005 Killzone 2 trailer. I think they've finally proved everyone wrong with Killzone 2. It is awesome based on videos and the short demo and seems to deserve AAA status.

Ubisoft - Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, EndWar, HAWX, Rainbow Six. Need I say more?

Theres more but thats what I can think of off the top of my head.

1. Nintendo-

Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros Brawl. Bringing the potential of the Wii out.

2. Konami and Kojima Productions-

Metal Gear Solid 4. One of my favorite games.

3. Media Molecule-

LittleBigPlanet. Innovation at its best.

that drives me insane when people put Media Molecule who have created a whopping one game this generation into the "top of" list.  I know LBP is amazing, in fact one of my favorite PS3 games, but have they REALLY impacted the generation that much?

My top would be

-Epic- Firstly The gears series is massive but that alone isn't enough for me to qualify them as being in the top.  The thing that makes Epic so important this gen is simply Unreal Engine 3.  Like it or hate it so many damn games run on this engine that its crazy

-Insomniac-  They've continued to pump out sequals to their great franchise Ratchet and Clank with Future and Quest for Booty as well as create a new successful franchise Resistance in a short amount of time.  They've done quite a bit for Playstation and can't wait to see thier future

-Nintendo- frankly the MOST impactful entity this gen.  While Nintendo is far from my personal favorite the sheer amount of attention they have brought to the gaming industry as well as creating millions of new video game players can't be ignored.

-Runner ups-  Bethesda, Naughty Dog, Sega, Capcom, Blizzard, Bioware, Valve

1) Nintendo, for making the Wii awesome for money.
2) Cat Daddy games, for demonstrating Carnival Games to the not Nintendo people as a money maker, and making games that go with beer.
3) Midway for making Wii Game Party, and making Midway not collapse.  And for Rampage which I like.
4) Sega, because I love my Genesis.

Great thread. :)

My personal list.

Epic:

These guys have done themselves very proud. They have released not only a new IP this gen but managed to put a sequel out as well. Both have hit amazing sales for a new IP, and also twicw shown us how brilliant they are with graphics. Also they pretty much made all other TPS feel horrible with controls. They have single handidly shown all other devs how 3rd person controls are supposed to be done. Very impressed with Epic this gen.

Lionhead:

I knew Fable 2 would be an improvement over 1, but how good I wasnt really expecting. Considering Fable 2 is my number 2 game this gen shows how much they have achieved. I am very looking forward to their hush hush project which is rumored to be out this fall.

Bioware:

Another new IP, and another amazing game. So far Bioware sit 3rd for me. But that may all change if MAss Effect goes on to stomp all over the original. They have really suceeded in making what I feel is the first proper free flowing space RPG. They have always been a skilled dev, but they surpassed themselves in this gen with for me at least their best work yet.

Runner up (honourable mention)

Insomniac:

OK so none of their games this gen would be in my top 10. But Res 1 & 2 as well as R&C are all solid good games. They have released 3 games on PS3 all within 2 years. A very good feat if you ask me considering none of their games were crap.

Nice list, imma gonna steal it :P Except I'd replace Insomniac with Naughty Dog. Resis 2 was crappy.

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

no particular order

naughty dog
insomniac
capcom (dispite 5gb installs)

1. Valve:
- Steam became the best and most popular digital service in videogaming industry, and is leading PC's transition into online.
- Orange Box was a stunning release.
- Left 4 Dead is the pure definition of Horror games this generation.

2- Crytek:
- Crysis was easily the best Action game of 2007 (if you don't include Orange Box)
- Crysis Warhead is even better than the original and was only $30.
- Their engine is the most powerful engine today, and shows the potential that Crytek has.

3. CD Projekt:
- The Witcher was the best RPG of 2007 and of this generation so far.
- Released Witcher's Enhanced Edition, which fixed nearly everything from the original, and was free of charge for the owners of the original copies.
- They opened the GOG.Com store that pure old school awesome.

1.)Capcom: Capcom brings the quality every generation.

Zack & Wiki
Devil May cry 4
Okami
Resident Evil 5
Street Fighter 4
Resident Evil 4
Megaman 9
Dead Rising

How can they not be considered #1 with games like those?

2.)Infinity Ward:
They have been amazing this generation.

3.)Insomniac:
Really good stuff from these guys.

Awesome to hear an opinion from a PC gamer. It's the only gaming platform I don't own. After buying a PS3, 360, Wii, PSP, and DS and all the awesome games that come with them I doubt I will own one this generation either. :(

PS3 Trophies

Kojima Productions- In all Honesty I did not expect MGS4 to be that great they were able to stick to their guns and they kept it exclusive despite all the pressure and succeded because of it. No one can claim to have a better game, with a more impactful story, great gameplay and most of all the end to a brilliant saga.

ATLUS- Even though they're still doing PS2 games the Persona series has been better than Most games I've played this gen and I plan on playing all of them. Truth be told I cant wait for them to make the Jump into this Gen.

Naughty Dog- The Uncharted series showed the world a glimpse of the true power of the PS3 and I cant wait for more.

Epic- When I had my 360 Gears of War almost turned me into a full frontal 360 fanboy and probably would have had my 360 not RROD on me.

Bioware- Played Jade Empire 2 and I made it a mission to play whatever the bring to the table Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2 are on my To Buy List

Insomniac- Quality assurance every year

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi
