So it's a 'fact' the PS3 is future proof? What, like forever?
Sales curve far out lasting the PS2?!
Sony needs to sack this so called rep.

| Alterego-X said: Bullsh PS2 wasn't future-proof because of its superior processor (it was inferior). It was shown in the last 7 generations, that superior graphical power was not major advantage for any console. PS1-2 were simply popular. So popular, that PS2 sells even now. There is no hidden "sony magic" that makes their consoles last longer, it is the natural process that always the most popular console can be sold for the longest time. PS3 is not popular, its sales are declining EVEN NOW! It is logical to expect that it will be the first one to disappear. See my signature. |
Okay I like you, you have Dexter in your picture. But I disagree with your statements.
PS3 isn't unpopular, its overpriced. As soon as it becomes affordable it will be very popular.
"PS3 is future proof" that quote is a few years old.
The thing is, there really is a "mass-market price range" above which people simply will not pay for a game console. This range changes over time depending on a lot of factors, including but not limited to how late in the console's life it is.
$400 is at the very top of that range for a console at launch, and even then just barely within it. Only two consoles have ever succeeded with this launch price: the PS2 and the 360. Most others that launched with that price, and everything that ever launched above it, has failed. People simply will not pay more than this for a console at launch in any significant numbers, and even $400 is barely tolerable, and there is no way Sony could not have known this. But instead of doing the sensible thing and scaling back the PS3's technology until it could reasonably be offered at a price people were willing to pay for it, they decided to gamble on marketing. Predictably, it failed.
But the story doesn't end there. Sony has been cutting the PS3's price as quickly as it can afford, if not frankly a bit faster. But the mass-market price range for a console drops over time: after one year it is usually lower than it was at launch (the Wii notwithstanding, but the Wii is an anomaly in this industry no matter how you measure it). Frankly, while the PS3's price has been dropping, it has not caught up to the mass-market range, nor has it even really kept pace with that range. The ever-widening gap between the PS3 and 360 is likely explained by this: if we assume all other things to be equal between those two consoles, the PS3's failure to keep pace with what the public is willing to pay for a game console of that age would indeed hurt it.
The hell of it is, there really isn't much that Sony can do about it now. They're still taking impressive losses on the PS3; they cannot afford to cut the price. No one denies that a price cut would help sales, but increased sales are not always good in the short term, especially when you're taking a loss on each unit. Sony does not have the luxury of being able to plan in the long term right now; they need something that can boost both the PS3 and Sony itself in the short term.
Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.
