Forums - Gaming - Is there such thing as a game killing another game?

I'm sure everyone has heard the term Halo Killer, or Mario Killer, so my question is has there ever been a game released that actually killed off a franchise or game?

The Sonic the Hedgehog series was the ultimate Sonic-killer.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

Madden killed the other series of NFL games... Err Maybe some of the other music games aren't so popular with GH and RB, but thats about it.

Tease.

^thats a game commiting suicide, I want to find a game that actually killed another game lol

Hmm I think I got one. Unreal Tournament killed Quake 3 Arena. That pretty much killed Quake as the "Top dog" of the multiplayer shooters on PC.

no. People are just crazy and like to argue about what's better than what even though it's all just personal opinion...

Yes. Battlefield series... It killed the cnc fps series called the "Renegade" games. They were working on a sequal in 2003 with graphics that rival half life 2 in 2005. EA decided to stop production of it because they were also publishing battlefield series. Didn't want it to hinder sales. Then again it could also have been because they were gonna close westwood studios.. which i think also happened in 2003.. damn you ea.

Check out my game about moles ^

Yeah, it happens. Most of the time though, its when a genre has a good set of games, but then a massive, standard setting games come out for the genre. If its big enough it will overshadow all other games in the genre. Take Madden for exmple.

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

The majority of (non plot driven) games kill their predecessor. Ie Guitar Hero 4 killing the legs of GH3
