Actually, Amazon proved that user ratings work.  The 1.5 / 5 is what it deserves.  It is the one site that I trust user ratings as long as they have at least 20 votes.  Spore has over 3000, and if you read them, many of the low scores (1/5) are well thought out.

For those using this to complain about metacritic and say gamerankings is better are not paying attention.  People who give metacritic ratings, give those generated from professional critics.  The user ratings on the site are sometimes nice, especially for wii games that tend to often be under rated or misunderstood by the "professionals".  User rankings from metacritic are never given as evidence, except of fanboys...

Not really. If a number exceeds the limit.. they go into negative numbers. XD

Haha that's what happens when these mainstream gamers affect what the real gamers think. Blame us for that when really it's just the "kids" of today's gaming. Annoying ain't it.

Does anyone put any stock in user-ratings ... especially before the game is released?

I look at those sites to see what the "professional" reviewers say -- mostly to read the text to gain insights.

Of course, it does not make sense to let people rate a not-yet-released game.

Metacritic is useful, because it sums up the reviews, and doesn't just list the scores.  I found it useful for that.  I don't care what the masses say.  And speaking of which...

PEOPLE!  Just because I suggested you all rate EVERY game a 1 or 10 or 7 or zero in unison, to prove a point numeric scores are pathetic, doesn't mean you MUST do this.  PLEASE STOP THE MADNESS!
