Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 Shuts Up Gabe Newell!

Gilgamesh said:

Gabe Newell stated that the PS3 is a bad console, a failure, and that Sony should stop making it and try again. He refuse to develop games for the PS3 console because of its hard-to-develop-for cell, or so he says. This means we wont be seeing any PS3 port of Left 4 Dead. This also should have been obvious when Valve laughed and said they can’t wait to see Left 4 Dead on the PS3 (which they were being sarcastic). Gabe Newell needs to check his sources again because it is fact, that Valve hasn’t ever made anything close to the quality of killzone 2 this generation on the so called easy-to-develop-for platform labeled Xbox 360. Gabe Newell, as a well respected game developer should welcome the challenge, game development is not always going to be easy and you have to work hard at it to get amazing results as shown in Killzone 2. Until Gabe Newell can prove that he can out do anything of full potential for the PS3 on the 360, then he will eat his own words regarding the PS3 being terminated or being a failure.

Exactly, hes just being lazy, if you put a little effort into it there could be many games out like Killzone 2 on the PS3.

He ran his big mouth alot, and yeah KZ2 is easily more technicaly impressive than Valve's 360 games. He makes good games, but he's also a fan-boy ass. The fact that he's been so definitivley proven wrong, not just with KZ2 but with games like R&C: Future and Uncharted, speak to the stupity of his prior comments, and, like a piece of deep-fried cheesecake have shut his mouth.

You know how people hate when someone says something on the lines of a "My game is better than your game"?

Well, I hate when people act like Valve can do no wrong.

I can sit here with a straight face and say I found Portal to be one of the most boring game I have played last year. I think the only Valve game I have found pure enjoyment out of is TF2. I have still yet to play L4D so I can't comment on that.

People can quote me and tell me how ignorant I am, or how Portal was soooo awesome, etc... but I could care less.

If he refuses to make games for PS3 that is his prerogative (sp?), he has every right to not like it. Just like many in here have every right to think Valve is an overrated developer.

Well spoken. Like Khuutra said, "Agreed in principle". Might I ask what you didn't like about Portal?

To be honest it was always hard for me to put my finger on it. I think puzzlers just are not my style. My brain doesn't like to do much thinking when I game.

I gave the game around 2 hours or so playtime, no idea how long it is but it just never "grabbed" me if you know what I mean.

Team Fortress 2 on the other hand grabbed me right away. Makes me wish I never sold Orange Box to help pay off Fable II.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

What does Gabe think about the Wii? We all know that it wouldn't hurt if he spent a couple of hours on wii fit : P

To Valve : Screw the PS3. We don't want you delaying our updates just to do a PS3 port. The Spy update is far more important than the PS3.

To PS3 fanboys : Cry some moar!!! If Valve don't want to develop for the PS3 that's their decision. Deal with it.

first off, who cares what the valve guy said? who cares what hiphopgamer said? i feel that hhg is getting referenced way too often on these boards. not every personal blog/rumour site is worth linking to.

ps3 is surviving (perhaps on life support) without valve. even if valve's games were ported, it wouldn't make that much of an impact on the ps3's user base because it's would be multiplatform at that point. all this complaining sounds like sour grapes, tbh.

also, i've seen $20 million spent on development for killzone 2 used quite a few times. i'd like to see an official statement on that "fact". it really weakens your argument when throwing that "fact" into the faces of people who are raving about a game that they haven't played yet - because some of them have played the beta and at least there are professional reviews (take with however much salt is required) to back their claims of grandness.

i just recently got over fps motion-sickness so i haven't played any of valve's games other than left 4 dead - which i find fun but not revolutionary or goty material. i'm glad to hear that KZ 2 is stealing from TF class system because it always seemed like a really cool idea to me.

Title is misleading because...it's not true.

While I think Valve is utterly moronic for not developing on the PS3 because they're too uppity to bother learning the architecture, he IS entitled to his opinion. I think, in the long run - and I'm talking years from now - they're bitterness toward Sony will eventually catch up with them.

As for right now, they make their money..they don't need to port to the PS3 - but they're stupid not to..it's garunteed money, and I don't care how much money you make as a company - what's wrong with some extra income? If you can sell a few extra MILLION units, why would you pass that up? As I said..their stance will come back to haunt them.

Why does anyone care what Gabe thinks or what is company does or doesn't want to do?  Doesn't the PS3 have enough stuff?   Whining about Gabe and Valve is like whining about Kojima not wanting to bring MGS to the 360.  It is his choice, so be it.

Also, how do we know it is "guaranteed money"?  Was Bioshock on the PS3 "guaranteed money"?  Did they even break even with it?  How about The Orange Box?  Was that "guaranteed money"?

A "few million extra sales"?  Did Bioshock on the PS3 do this?  Anyone know what The Orange Box did on the PS3?

http://www.vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=13320

It didn't even sell 200,000 copies (according to this site).   It did 850,000 copies (according to this site) on the 360.

If doing a port doesn't even cover the costs of development for a system, why should a company do it?  There are VERY FEW titles that break into multimillion copies on the PS3.   There are times when games need to NOT be multiplatform.

Nice idea, but I'd suggest scuba diving, instead: doing whichever else physical activity he could certainly manage to eat at the same time anyway

He apparently likes it because it's the only console that doesn't feel like it's trying to be a PC.
