Forums - Nintendo - Iwata Q&A interesting tidbits - SD card storage fix coming Spring, more...

SD slot I've always believed it be an expansion slot like many other devices. I was stunned when it was only used for transferring photos, music and save files.

Also, SDHC are getting cheaper, got already an 8GB SDHC. And for future consoles they should go down this route, SSD with expandable memory, with the next generation memory card of a 2TB SDXC, that is twice the size of my PC HD.

I thought Nintendo said that the update would allow you to download games from the Shop Channel directly to the SD Card? and that's it!!! That is not a solution.

I hope we can load from the SD Card. That is what Nintendo needs to do.

During his presentation at the Nintendeo Conference in autumn 2008, Iwata said the update coming in spring 2009 would do two things: you got the first one, which is quite clear, but the second is a bit vague.

1. Software purchased from the Shopping Channel can be downloaded directly to an SD card.
2. A simple operation will allow Wii software on an SD card to be copied to and run from the internal storage memory.

The above is my own translation of his comments available on the official Nintendo website.
I find it interesting (confusing?) that in the Japanese where he uses the word "copy", they instead use the word "transfer" in the English translation on the Nintendo website.

Anyway, that is what the man said last autumn. Personally, I hope it all works out like Viper is saying.

Viper: I've yet to use the SD card slot in my DSi and don't know exactly how it operates. Do you know if the DSi copies all files to internal memory before running the software, or does it continue to access the SD card while the game is running?

I don't have any experience with the DSi yet, unfortunately.   I don't know if it runs straight off the SD card or dumps it to interal memory first though I've heard it's the former for music and photos and the latter for DSiWare.
