I've completed RE4 twice, and finished all the merc missions with 5 star ratings - all on the gamecube version. I've also finished the game, and completed all the merc missions (again with 5 stars) on the wii version. I know both control schemes very well :) If you never played RE4 then it's possible that you just don't like the control setup.
As for the sheva comment - I agree to some extent, she does get in the way sometimes. However, I've been playing this game with randoms over the internet who actually don't run in front of you, and will actually save your ass quite a number of times (even if the AI partner does this anyway). Still playing with someone or a mate makes this game much more enjoyable.
The controls are exactly the same as RE4 gamecube except you're now pressing different buttons to do the same actions. Also, the aiming on fastest in RE5 is alot better than the aiming on RE4 gamecube.
Let me reiterate that if Capcom haven't changed the controls now (i.e. they actually built the game from the ground up with these controls in mind) they won't change it a few weeks before the game's release. All I can say is too bad you don't like it...
