Forums - Nintendo - The fear I have ( wii support related)

If you own just a wii i would get a PS3 or 360 if you want big games. Third parties have never been big for Nintendo, and Nintendo does not care. They don't care to have third party support, this would mean less people buying the stuff Nintendo makes.

Nintendo is swimming in Money, either they don't want big third party games or they went to the third parties and they just laughed at Nintendo, and they said sure we will port PS2 games over to the wii, but the big titles will not go to the wii.

The wii is just a way for third parties to fund the big games for the 360/PS3/PC.

i want big games

therefore i have my almost alienware like PC

I'd like to mention some games that have been announced lately.

2 JRPGs: Fuurai no Shiren 3 and Oboro Muramasa Youtouden

Worms: A Space Oddity

We Love Golf

Monster Lab

Tales of Symphonia sequel

GranTurismo Nintendo does care about 3rd parties. For example the game that will have Mario and Sonic in it made by Sega or the fact that they are publishing RE: UC and Zack & Wiki in Europe for Capcom.

And to further prove this here is quote from an interview with Iwata:

Another thing we've learned at Nintendo is how to disseminate the information to third parties on how to build a successful software for the Wii. Last month, we had a developer's conference sponsored by Nintendo. One thing that happened: the Wii sports programmers put together information on how to better utilize the motion sensor and how they utilized it in Wii sports. We gave that information out at the developers' conference. We've heard some rough feedback, and what I have heard is that some people were surprised that Nintendo was willing to give that sort of information out to other people. I mean, up to that point, Nintendo had a reputation of being very, very closed mouthed and close-fisted with that sort of information: develop it on our own, keep it to ourselves, and not being very friendly to outside developers.

Now I have a development background myself, so I really understood. I thought to myself "Hey, people want to know how we're doing this." I convinced a lot of people at Nintendo to allow us to give out all this information. Now, of course, there's the possibility of being imitated, having ideas taken from us before we're able to use them ourselves. But at the same time, if the industry doesn't grow, then we can't grow and we don't feel that the industry--we have to have the industry to survive so we may survive as well.

Third party game announcements for the Wii have outpaced announcements for the XBox 360 and PS3 since (roughly) E3 2006; the reason for that is developers saw the excitement anound the Wii at E3 and found resources to develop or port games to the Wii. Most of these games are discounted as third party support because they were not particularly good ...

One thing people often forget is that even on the PS2, PSP, Nintendo DS, Gamecube, XBox and Wii it takes (at least) 12 to 18 months to develop a good game from scratch and unlike the PS3 developers were not anticipating the Wii being super successfull in late 2005/early 2006. Starting in early 2008 you will really start to see a major improvement in the quantity and quality of game announcements for the Wii.

The thing is that a game like Yakuza has to be realistic and have nice graphic to sell well so it probably better on PS3 or Xbox360. Anyway it's not like it's a big license or anything I bet Sonic and Mario at the Olympic will sell at least twice as much. For eternal sonata it was made for the xbox360 and they probably think that it won't sell that well there and decided to just put it on PS3 also. The Japanese lineup for the PS3 doesn't impress me at all. The only thing that surprise me is that it looks like Star Ocean 4 will be for PS3 it just doesn't really make sense but anyway it's just a rumor and it's not my favorite RPG anyway and not that big of a license in Japan also.

3rd party developers started development on the PS3 in early 2006 (maybe earlier?)

3rd party developers ignored the Wii until mid to late 2006, when it omgpwnt E3.

There's plenty of 3rd party games coming for the Wii. You just need to wait a little longer.

There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.

I have been thinking a bit about John's 240million Wii consoles thread and realized that yes he could in fact be very close to the final number and I'll give some reason's to back him up on it.

1. The Wii will be the first console during it's 5 year stint to drop way below 100$ making it a true mass market product. (I expect Nintendo is aiming for a 50$ console and not the 99$ console people expect them to be after).

2. The Wii will have the largest game library of any console ever released. The VC and Wiiware guarantee this.

3. The device is marketed completely different then any other console before it. Nintendo hasn't targeted kids... it's targeting everyone.

4. Nintendo will enter India and China at the right time with the right price. In the past Nintendo was always scared of hitting these markets due to piracy. This time they have the governments on side with them to stop some of the pirate problems. Both are emerging power houses and to reap the benefits of their power they need to squash things like software piracy.

5. Both Sony and Microsoft will be weakened due to continuing losses in their games divisions. Nintendo warned everyone that they saw a market crash coming, they were talking about their competitors market's crashing specifically. We heard this from Nintendo for at least 2 years.

6. Old companies die, new ones emerge. We're going to see a lot of this happen this gen. Companies like Silicon Knights have their days numbered for them. They pulled a Majesco and instead of going the casual games route they are trying to bankrupt another company to pay for their own. This never ends pretty.

Old powerhouses like Square and Rockstar will rely on old franchises to keep their boats steady for investors. This will in fact lower their total marketshare. They need to make more games for different genres to soften any blows from possible market implosion. We're swamped with GTA rip offs and FF clones... Nobody makes Shoot em ups to the same avail as they use to. That market was overdone as well...

This directly relates to the original post.  The Wii may hit some rough spots during it's lifespan but for the reasons I stated, the problems won't last long.  Third parties will either have to innovate or they'll be pushed out of the market.  If they stick to their old ways of doing things, they'll definately see a decrease in sales for their software.  A new FF game for the Wii with a 120million install base won't guarantee anymore sales of the new FF then it did on the PS2... going by the trends we can easily see with software like Zelda, every new game in the franchise will sell a bit less then the last (once the franchise reaches it's peak in sales, the only way to go is down, unless you can figure out a way to attract new players).  It's better for the Wii to get new game franchises then it is to get a lot of slowing older franchises as new franchises can offer the system new players.  Of course old franchises also bring the dedicated players into your realm so of course you still want them as well.  Just don't bank on them as much as you use to.

Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.

well we can see now what we get ubi creates a complete new family line for the wii ea does the same.
cruis'in looks like complete crap. No effort at all. not even gamecube level.

And a lot of ps3/xbox360/pc games got announced yet again.
Now tell me my fear is still wrong.

what do you expect? go back to E3, the biggest thing N announced was "White Thing You Stand On" that made sure to delay my Wii purchase even longer, it was one of the dumbest things i've seen since Virtual Boy. don't worry N's getting plenty of support though.

That's a really great post! You did a lot of interesting speculation and tied together many different thoughts that have been floating around on the forum in the past few months. No one knows exactly what the future holds but this will be a nice post to refer back to a year from now, and further...

Thanks!
