Forums - Gaming - Why has Sonic failed to branch out the way Mario has?

Because no one is as big as Mario. Sonic is the second most popular video game mascot in the world. Wow. That's something to be ashamed of I guess. Alex Kidd, Spyro, and Crash have branched out much better than Sonic. Right? How about that question? Who, besides for Mario, has branched out more than Sonic has?

Pokemon.

well sonic 1 was superb as was sonic 2, but it just kept going down from there on.

Hey, Sonic 3 and Knuckles was a cool game ):

Let's not forget Sonic Riders and Sonic Pinball Advance and SEGA Superstar Tennis.

Sonic has changed too much. The 2D platformers as of late have been of questionable quality. Hell, when Mario spinoffs get higher reviews than Sonic mainstream games there's a problem.

Pixel Art can be fun.

Pokemon did not start out as a video game.

I think one of the reasons why Sonic hasn't branched out as well...is due to such a poor supporting cast. Sonic is an icon, Tails and Robotnik are decent...but the other characters are pretty derivative.

When you look at Mario, pretty much every single character is iconic (be they hero or villain).

The Playstation doesn't really have a mascot like Mario for Nintendo or Halo for Microsoft, there never really was a specific character from the PS1 days that kept showing up in these huge games. Unless Gran Turismo counts but I don't know how that'll work :S

Well personally I don't think Sonic was ever as good as Mario. It was all right but not amazing.

But I agree with this. Pretty much Playstation big franchises have been Gran Turismo and Grand Theft Auto. I don't think you need some fancy mascot. They tried to make it Sackboy and he's done well with 2 million sales and counting. But no Mario type sales.
