Forums - Gaming - Why has Sonic failed to branch out the way Mario has?

Easy. Mario games are still some of the most fantastic games out there and the Sonic games aren't even acceptable quality. SEGA is being really stupid; its so damn easy to fix Sonic, and yet they just REFUSE to do it.

CAN THEY NOT JUST LISTEN TO THE FANS ALREADY?! I would like nothing more in gaming then to see my favorite blue hedgehog rise again...except of course Tales of Vesperia 2. But thats for another arguement :P

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

The Playstation doesn't really have a mascot like Mario for Nintendo or Halo for Microsoft, there never really was a specific character from the PS1 days that kept showing up in these huge games. Unless Gran Turismo counts but I don't know how that'll work :S

Dude, what the heck does this have to do with the thread? I really don't get it. :P

I think the main problem with Sonic is that his entire being now revolves around going fast (even though his old 2d games are hardly just that). Mario is an extremely versatile character compared to Sonic, at least in my opinion.

That, and Mario just kicks ass on a degree that's untouchable. Imagine the best GTA game starring Sonic that you can think of..... Now imagine the same for Mario. No contest imo. :P Mario has way too much going for him as a character in almost any situation. In fact, I can't think of one genre I wouldn't like to play as Mario in...

That being said, I absolutely love Sonic!

....ahhhh, I read "Why has SONY failed to branch out...." didn't realize it said Sonic, I must be tired....I better go to bed  lol

My bad, ignore that post people

Sonic's main games have been pretty uninspiring for a while... I think Sega should make decent Sonics first before trying to branch out.. but Mario & Sonic at the Olympics was a huge seller and the Winter Games is a virtual certainty.

Because Sonic is inherently tied around a play mechanic - speed.

Mario can be put in to anything and it makes sense. It's hard to stick Sonic in other game modes and pull it off.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

sonic has an rpg too, sonic chronicles, which is great IMO

Bingo! Look at Sonic Chronicles. The question always asked was how do you deal with the speed issue in a turn based game? No one would ever ask that of Mario, because he is tied to nothing. He is a chameleon able to shape shift into whatever genre he sees fit. If the next Mario game is an open world GTA game, you better your ass it'll feel like Mario and it'll be awesome. The problem with Sonic always was that he's the fast Mario. Without the speed, you revert back to a generic platform placeholder, and that is Mario's job.

I don't get it.. I posted the exact same thing, but more in depth. Stof goes on to post that completely disregarding the fact that I did (I think?) and then Onyx quotes him and says he's right...

Why do people overlook me?! :P
