Bingo! Look at Sonic Chronicles. The question always asked was how do you deal with the speed issue in a turn based game? No one would ever ask that of Mario, because he is tied to nothing. He is a chameleon able to shape shift into whatever genre he sees fit. If the next Mario game is an open world GTA game, you better your ass it'll feel like Mario and it'll be awesome. The problem with Sonic always was that he's the fast Mario. Without the speed, you revert back to a generic platform placeholder, and that is Mario's job.
