Forums - Microsoft - What to do when 360 scratches disc?

Hey, I just grabbed a copy of Gears 2 from my local Blockbuster for a 5-day rental and just got home and booted it up. I want to download the gold lancer

Anyways I then decided I would install the game, no idea why, but I just did. While updating I walked away from the room and when I came back the screen said it could not continue the installation because disc was dirty, scratched, etc...

I checked the disc and there is now an obvious ring around the disc, it is closer to the outside edge than the inside. I have never seen a 360 disc scratch this way before so I do not know where the scratch should be located.

Is there anything I can do temporarily to make this thing work now? I do not want a rental to turn into a purchase...

Thanks in advance.

well i has a whole paragraph written out but reading back through it, it was a troll fest.

the best i can say is just wipe the disk a bit and try putting a bit of turps on it. it has worked on some of my old ps1-2 games.

Nobody's perfect. I aint nobody!!!

Killzone 2. its not a fps. it a FIRST PERSON WAR SIMULATOR!!!! ..The true PLAYSTATION 3 launch date and market dominations is SEP 1st

@Euphoria - Is there any chance it was scratched before you rented it? Do you have the 360 on its side or does it lay flat? Aside from carefully wiping the disc, I don't think there is much else you can do.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

If you have any pokemon near you, you can let them cry. It worked in the First Pokemon Movie.

Well, the game still loads. I just turned the game on for the first time now and everything seems fine so far up to the first level.

You think I can squeeze this entire game out this weekend or should I return it and say I got it that way?

I could probably pull off a return though since the teller was talking about the discs being scratched to the customer in front of me, but I would much rather play then have to drive back today.

@dbot

All my console are laid down horizontal. It could have possibly been scratched before. I was out of the room before the download was interrupted. At first it was installing fine.

I think it is recommended for the 360 to be horizontal to prevent scratching.  I suspect the disc was scratched before you rented it, unless someone knocked the console during the install.  You can give it a shot, but if the game wouldn't install it will most likely give you problems running from the disc.  Microsoft will replace the disc for $20, not that you want to do that.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

the place i rent games, for an extra quarter you buy insurance for the game so incase it gets scratched or something and doesn't work anymore you don't have to buy the game.

If it quit copying at some point during the process it most likely means that it can't read that section of the disc, which means that you most likely won't be able to get past that point in the story.  Maybe take it back and get a new disc.

We're talking about a rental here. Play it for as long as it lets you. If and when it freezes, bring it back and tell them it was this way when you got it, which is probably the truth regardless.

If this ever happens to you when you buy a game though, there's a really good method of getting a free replacement.
