Do companies normally announce games at the GDC? I thought that it was mostly about design theory.

Games oftentimes squeeze into the side of all the happenings around GDC, and sometimes make somewhat prominent appearances. GDC is one of those events where anything can happen. I wouldn't go into it expecting some amazing announcements for games though, the chances of being let down are fairly high. Besides, if you don't expect an amazing announcement, and they do make one, that just makes it all the more exciting.

Given that there's a keynote, I expect them to talk about some new game design theory being incorporated into one of their games, but not necessarily the game itself. The patent from a while back coming up would be interesting...

Which patent are you referring to?

The one outlined here, speculation and all.

"Discovering New Development Opportunities"

If the GDC is all about new technologies and Nintendo are relating it to "Discovering New Development Opportunities" then I'd say they'll focus on a few things.

1. Wii MotionPlus: How the device enhances the Wii Remote and the possibilities it brings.

2. DSi: New features such as the cameras and the on board memory. May touch on DSiWare and WiiWare. Also may speak about the new motion sensing DS card.

Apart from that, they could always talk a little bit about the Wii Balance board or even the Wii Zapper.

That patent is another possibility but something I highly doubt.. The best thing we could hope for is them using an unannounced game to show off some of the things they're going to talk about. That or showing gameplay of announced games we don't know much about i.e. Punchout!! etc

Don't forget that Gears 2 was announced at GDC--that was a big one

We also know that Mass Effect 2 is going to be formally announced there.

That said, Microsoft and Nintendo operate on different planes.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

"Ok, girl's trapped in the elevator, and the power's off.  I swear, if a zombie comes around the next corner..."

I think it's safe to expect, (and pretty much given), a release date for Wii Sports Resorts if this keynote is in March and if Iwata talks about Wii Motion Plus.

Edit: That is if Wii Sports Resorts doesn't have a release date, yet.
