Forums - Gaming - Can the 360 stop Sony’s Momentum?

What momentum? PS3 is down year-on-year while the 360 is up. I don't see how anything short of a price cut can give the PS3 real momentum. The games don't matter that much as MGS4 proved (or if they do, they don't at least boost hardware for a long time, perhaps they have an almost equal effect before and after they launch).

Well MS can't stop Sony from releasing great games in '09 but they have halted PS3's sales momentum pretty damn well. No game or games, no matter how great are going to move a $400 system to any great extent.

I don't know if they halted sony's momentum or just boosted their own. Sony may be slowly hitting the threshold of those who want the system at $400. I'm no M. Pachter though so I may be wrong

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

I think Sony will do what the do best this gen, screw it all up. Not sure about halo rts, but alan wake and ninja blade along with gta dlc will do well. However, how that will get more people to purchase a 360, I have no idea!

There are more reasons to buy a ps3 this year; price drop, killzone2, god of war 3, gt5 and hopefully, yakuza 3.

Whoever wants a halo rts more then likely already owns a 360, but apparently there are approximately 40% of ps2 owners who still haven't made the jump to a current gen console yet. This 40% may have some good reasons to pick up a ps3 this march.

I agree with the marketing, but they also need to Market the eye toy and produce more software for it. The eye toy has a lot of potential and can possibly win over some casual gamers looking for more then a wii.

Knowing Sony though, they will throw away the advantage they have and ms will laugh away to another victorious year with the 360.

Nothing can stop sony in 2009. Not even all the money microsoft has can stop them.

Microsoft could afford to purchase Sony and disband the company as a cruel joke aimed at you cheese_man. Never doubt Microsoft's money.

Yeah right. How would that make any ounce of sense whatsoever? Also if M$ had all that money to give to charity, why are people getting laid off?

yea they're laying off people but did you read the part about how they made over 4 billion dollars in profit and still found the need to lay off people?  Microsoft has enough money to do anything, the question is what they choose to do with it.

second this. A better timing to bring up this topic is when PS3 starts outselling 360.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

yea i don't know what momentum the OP is referring to either. When sales start slowing down and week after week is down YOY that's not momentum, especially when your other 2 competitors are up.

Microsoft couldnt afford Sony... like they cant afford Yahoo without a loan.

Microsoft was paying Yahoo more than it was worth (in cash should the stockholders pick it over MS stock.) Yahoo refused the buyout because they had a deal with Google in the works. The government didn't allow the deal and MS lost all interest in Yahoo. If Microsoft wanted, they could have purchased Yahoo. Had the deal been approved, Microsoft would have brought out even more of its assets. When you combine Microsoft's cash reserves with stock options, Microsoft could afford to buy and sell Sony.

I'll third it...  First we have to see some real momentum...  And not the type that lasts only a few weeks after KZ2 is released.

I don't know anyone who is waiting on KZ2 to buy a PS3 for $400. The only people I know that want a PS3 are already sold on it but are waiting on the price cut. I dont think any game is going to shift the momentum to the PS3 this year for more then a couple weeks.
