I knew a couple of cops before they became cops and it was surprising how much they changed. I try to take the compassionate view rather than just call them dicks, but like lewis said you see and do alot of things decent people shouldn't have to. That can change a person that doesn't have an iron clad will. Makes them cynical or even bitter. And when you have a cynical person that realizes how much power they have and that in any given situation people will believe him over the other person, they start to use that power. I see young cops sometimes that seem so polite, unsure and naive compared to the person next to them that doesn't smile and looks at you like you're a criminal even when you're the one asking for help. Alot of cops are dicks, but it's often because it's a job that turns regular people with weak wills into jackasses that don't care about the populous the vowed to serve.

About the thread at hand: Get yourself a transfer and take yourself over to whoever it is who protects civil liberties. The British High Court (soon to be Supreme Court) is where we'ed take this, I assume that the law is on your side.

EDIT: btw... you live in a rural area? Hell, that sounds like a dangerous place. Like Midsumor Muders.

Being that I live in Georgia, a lot of people don't approve of interracial dating.  I could care less.  Hate me from a distance.  The problem I have is that more than a couple of them work in LAW ENFORCEMENT.  They don't bother me because I'm squeaky clean.  My closet was opened a while back.  The only thing they can find wrong with me is that I talk to a lot of different girls.  Since I'm single now, that's of no consequence to me.  Instead, they target my girlfriends.  One girl in particular has been harrased so much that she refuses to ride through certain parts of town.  Whenever she does, they pull her over and harass her.  A year ago, she was arrested and charged with marijuana possesion.  Her car was towed (and I payed $120 to get it out of impound).  Her bond fee was TRIPLED (and I paid the bondsman $400+) out of my pocket to get her out of jail.  That's all well and good except for one thing:  The chemical and microscopy test showed that what she was arrested for WASN'T EVEN MARIJUANA.  The case was dismissed, but she still has the arrest (but no conviction) on her record.  Cost me almost $600.  At the time, our relationship was supposed to be secret, so I took that loss.

Last night, she near that part of town again.  I told her that if she ever goes down there, make sure that EVERYTHING is in order.  "Don't even have an expired air freshener in your car!",  I said.  Well, they pulled her over.  They searched her car.  She was arrested.  She had 800 milligram Ibuprofen (Tylenol, essentially), in a regular Tylenol bottle.  It was "her time of the month" and she uses it for cramps.  She was charged with carrying perscription medication outside of it's original container.  I'm sure the officer felt much better with that Ibuprofen off of the streets!

She was brought to jail (where I was working on another case).  The officer calls my boss and gets her bond denied.  She has to spend the night.  They said that she can get out in the morning (which has already passed).  I've been trying to call her, but I'm not getting an answer.  I think she's still in jail (most arrestees are released after a couple of hours when they post a bond).  I'm going up there in a little while to see what happened.

I'm also quitting my job.

It takes a certain kind of person to be in law enforcement.  There are things that we see that "decent" people should never see.  There are things we know that "decent" people should never know.  And, there are things we do that "decent" people would NEVER do.  I'm tired of coming home with dirt on my hands.  I'm tired of shaking hands and putting my life in the hands of people that I don't trust OR respect.  I been thinking of quitting for a while now.  Last night was just the last straw.  F**k that job.  F**k the police.  I didn't sign up for this shit.

You could have this story slip to the press and civil right associations, if it's not too dangerous, or better, to prevent every possible retaliation towards you or your current and former gf's, you could have her drive in the "dangerous" area carrying a good lawyer incognito onboard, so that this filthy story bursts seemingly casually.

OT: Man, that's the south, son. You know this. Fools down here hate for various reasons. They know you can bury them, but will harass your fam/loved ones to get at you.

You quit and you have no backup. The haters will make your life a living hell.

I remember my first real interracial relationship - a hawt Japanese chick - when she walked, her booty would clap. Anyhow, we are riding together in her friend's whip - we are in Mississippi - and hugged up. Folks passing by were looking at us like we had bubonic.

While we were in the grocery store, holding hands, folks were crashing their baskets into aisles and gasping.

Years later, me and a fellow intern are at Disney World in O-town. We weren't even kickin' it - though she did hang at my crib, kicked off her heels (her legs and feet are amazing) - and went on rides there. Folks were staring us down.

Now, my wife is very light skinned - can pass for a mutt - and folks have asked me if she's foreign, Flip or Hispanic.

Bottom line ... the south sucks and are still pissed for losing the Great War of Northern Aggression. Haters, son, haters.
