Forums - Gaming - Indy exclusive to Wii - My thoughts on why it happened and what it means for HD

You could be right on why this game is moving - but it's not going to start any big move from HD gaming. There are huge profits to be made on 360/PS3 for games like COD and Assassin's Creed, and those games simply aren't going to shift as, to be honest, they need the HD as part of their appeal.

I still think the Wii has more than enough failures to show it isn't and automatic success to put a game on it. Also, both PSN and the 360 equivalent (sorry, mental failure and can't be bothered to look it up, honest, no offense to be taken by my 360 owning gaming brethren) offer a low cost avenue for more indie games as well, with a growing number of true successes on each.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Actually, the new TMNT is also suggestive that my theory is correct. TMNT havn't had a great game since... what? NES? I doubt a TMNT game would be taken serious by HD console owners but is should sell well on Wii.

It's biggest challenge is it's aping Brawl and dispite having largely the same creative pool it's very unlikely to be better than Brawl so it'll really need to distinquish itself somehow aside from IP to convince people to buy it as well as or instead of Brawl.

How dare you forget my favorite:

I agree with your OP, of course.

@Parokki: That would be pretty ironic if it were the case, wouldn't it? I mean, if "smaller" franchises like Suikoden/SMT (just theoretically) went to Wii, while experimental ones like NMH, de Blob, or point & clicks are on the Wii, while all the big blockbusters are on the HD consoles - which console sounds more hardcore?

maybe they put the HD ones on hold to generate cash flow from the wii/ds/psp versions?

I hear this idea of Wii being the cash cow to finance HD games commonly from 'core' gamers - most recently about Sonic Unleashed - but does that make any sense?  If you don't think your HD version is going to make profit then why the hell are you making it?  If they need the 'cash flow' from Wii then that suggests either A) they expect the HD version to lack profitability or B) it's costing them too much damn money to make.

yea, I agree, i dont think the HD consoles will lose the heavy hitters, but alot of the AA titles will come over to the Wii (with an occasion AAA title, like MH3 and DQX, and maybe KH3)

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

2 of the best SNES games were TMNT games.

I have to agree with Gamerace on this one.

If you don't thick that your HD games are going to make money, then there is no reason to make them.

Here it's well worth remembering that AAA games aren't necessarily the most enjoyable. Over the years, how many games have made you say: "objectively speaking it's not that good, but I love it!"? How many came totally under the radar, but ended up blowing you away? How many of your favorites have literally been put together by three guys in a garage? Most people tend to equate AAA with extremely high budgets and hype, but very few of my favorite games for any platform have ever appeared on most wanted lists of big gaming sites.

Damn, I'm getting excited about my Wii all over again. Better go play some PC games for now, and wait for this stuff to actually happen. Then again, I'll be spending Oct 2009/Aug 2010 away from my consoles in Japan, so I'm going to be overwhelmed by the amount of stuff to play no matter what happens. =P
