Forums - Gaming - Indy exclusive to Wii - My thoughts on why it happened and what it means for HD

It's a neat trick. I thought it was an alternative game to the HD one, but it turns out to be a switch?  Awesome. I do hope that it leads to more of these strong HD brands that were labelled as "underperforming" get sent across. This is basically the way that Wii has gained support from Japan, too.

Indy could be labelled a fluke, but if it succeeds, platinum sales or on up, it could convince LucasArts to really get back on board with Wii, then other struggling Western developers could come over to the Wii side too.

So basically you're saying that competition on the HD consoles would likely be too tough for this game, and while the majority of Wii gamers don't know gaming brands, they sure as heck know Indie? Hey, that actually makes complete sense! Big name license games generally aren't the cream of the crop, but every now and then there's a gem like Transformers on the PS2.

I hope other publishers realize the same and start moving their not-blockbuster-but-still-not-shovelware titles back to SD. There are lots and lots of games out there that are every bit as good as the multi-million selling high budget sequels, but fail to make a profit due to loyal hardcore gamers going for what they know they like. Kinda like how some attribute a lot the PS1's success to third parties not wanting to compete with Nintendo's first party games, except now there are way more genres than ten years ago, and Nintendo largely ignores many of them.

Many people will undoubtedly laugh and say the Wii is getting all the games that aren't good enough for the HD consoles, but well... everyone's happy this way, right? ^^

Wow, my thoughts exactly. Great post man!

I think it's a good idea to put the smaller games on the Wii. That way, they can spend what they are not spending on graphics on the game itself.

How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...

Makes a ton of sense!, Nice write-up.

I completely agree and I think it'll do really great on wii. Whereas self proclaimed "Hardcore gamers" of the HD consoles tend to look down their noses at licenses and movie tie-ins, acting like they're beneath them - The Wii's "expanded" audience will LOVE Indiana Jones, especially the new gamers.

Xbox360 and PS3 are reducing the scope of what genres can be successful on them and a game like Indy will surelly underperform in sales compared to many big hits of those genres. We don't need to look further than their game: "Fracture" that, sadly, is not performing well and they need profit in order to keep the game studios alive.

Indiana Jones games are less platform rich and action oriented than Tomb Raider and that has not performed as expected now that Lara is more known in gaming than Indiana Jones.

The move to wii was more conservative and the risk for losses are far less. I do not think it will be a huge seller, but Lucast Arts will get profits in sales from all three platforms (Wii+DS+PSP).

What this means is that HD consoles are slowly becoming the not best choice to try new ideas and get a profit from it. The blame should be put on third party developers and publishers that are packing the HD consoles with the known genres and leaving less space for new ideas.

shit, the casuals are winning. we're all gonna die.

How about pancakes?

@OP

I like your analysis, and it is even makes sense from a business standpoint!

To add to your point, there is also this:

Very few video games make a profit, and we all know that it is harder on the HD consoles.

Actually, the new TMNT is also suggestive that my theory is correct. TMNT havn't had a great game since... what? NES? I doubt a TMNT game would be taken serious by HD console owners but is should sell well on Wii.

It's biggest challenge is it's aping Brawl and dispite having largely the same creative pool it's very unlikely to be better than Brawl so it'll really need to distinquish itself somehow aside from IP to convince people to buy it as well as or instead of Brawl.

Edit: Sorry TMNT fans... I stand corrected, the last great game of theirs was on SNES.
