Forums - Sony - PSP attach rate awful?

I have around 50 original PS2 games. True, i payed full price for 30 of them, most of the other i bought used or later on when they got cheaper, but still games are original. So those that say that piracy doesn't hurt that much any system are awfully wrong. Attach rate for PS2 is 4.5 i think, overall. Now i am not going to belive that on average people only have some 4-5 games PS2 games when there are SO MANY great games for PS2. Most of PS2 are modded and play piracy games. I am not some hardcore gamer but still i have 50 games. PIRACY hurts a lot, it seems that Sony learned their mistake made on PSP being so easy to mod, so now PS3 is still only "bullet proof" system out there. I am not saying that hackers wont find their way to brake it, but it is going to take time and it ain't gonna be easy now whet it uses blue ray.

I own 4 PS2 games and the 4th was only purchased because it got me a mail-in rebate when I purchased the PS2. It wasn't my primary system and I didn't get it till it was $120. The only reason I finally got one was because I'd had 3 games that I was playing on my brother's system until he bought his house and moved out.

Like you said, you got it just recently when it drop to 120 so your purchase doesnt mean that much. You bought system when the "race" was already over and statistics  decided. And like you said it wasnt your primary system you just got it to play few game. BUT there is other group of people that purchased PS2 LONG LONG time ago when it was more expensive and was "in the zone", "the gaming machine to own".

So basically you can't compare yourself and try to justify statistic with your purchase of system and games for it.

Umm , the PS2s game shipment passed the 1 billion , so it has to be much bigger atach rate , maybe 8-1 ( my guess ) .

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

It's very true that the PSP has pretty much the worst attach rate of any significant system in recent memory and possibly ever. Piracy and the fact it's a multimedia device are part of it, but I think the big reason is one that's not really talked about here. The people who are buying the PSP are not dedicated portable gamers. They still play their PS2 a lot more than their newer PSP. And when it's time to buy GTA, or Madden, or whatever other game is available for both systems these people owning both a PS2 and PSP are probably 5 to 1 taking the PS2 version. For the DS games are cheaper, as they should be on handhelds, and the big games are really all exclusive to the system, and thus you get a significantly higher attach rate despite many gamers being much less hardcore than the typical PSP gamer.

It has nothing to do with people downloading games to play on hacked PSPs. The same thing was very easy and inexpensive on the PS1, PS2, Xbox, Game Boy Advance, and it's pretty easy and cheap on the DS, too, but none of those had such low software sales. The reason for the low attach rate is that Sony has pushed the multimedia features more than the games, and as such, there are a lot of people who are using them as mp3 players and video players.

Honestly, warez and P2P don't have anywhere near the effect that the industry wants everyone to believe. If they did, then lots of record labels would have gone out of business long ago considering that you can download an artist's entire discography in 2-3 hours max.

Consoles owned: Saturn, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, PSP, DS, PS3

Ive owned 5 games for my psp and 3 movies...i currently own no games...took em back and got some money for em...i still have the movies...incase i get stuck somewhere and need to watch something.

The Emulating and the piracy on the PSP is beyond ridiculous. I know at least 7 people who own a PSP and no games, they just emulate games.

I even saw a kid playing the original FInal Fantasy VII emulator on his PSP in baltimore round July 22.

It's not because of its media capabilities its the emulators.

Xbox Live Gamertag - Deathscythe X

AIM SN - Alexie Di Onie

From the PSP owners that I know Is no one that haves an original game for it.

I agree with the people blaming piracy. Any system that can be modded without having to physically open up the system is just asking for trouble. Look at how it crippled the Dreamcast when a way was found to play backed up games without even the need for a modchip.

Now that you say it, yeah, the attach rate must really be awful. The PSP has an installed user base MUCH bigger than any current gen home console, yet there hardly ever is a PSP game in the software charts.
I never considered the PSP a failure, but in that respect, it probably is.

Currently playing: NSMB (Wii)

Waiting for: Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii), The Last Story (Wii), Golden Sun (DS), Portal 2 (Wii? or OSX), Metroid: Other M (Wii),
... and of course Zelda (Wii)

Piracy. Personally I believe there is broad group of users who would never buy a PSP if there was no piracy. They lower attach rate it's obvious. Software sale would be on the same level even with much lower userbase. It doesn't mean PSP owners buy less games. Truth is Sony makes some cash even on pirated unit.
Edit:
Personally I bought 9 PSP games so far.

It really is piracy.  I mean I'm going to be the first person i know who won't be using his for piracy.
