Forums - Sales - How do you define lifespan? How does Sony?

How about when all the games being developed before the successor being released are all released? Sounds good no?

It's just hard to agree with that when the PS2 has even relatively recently gotten comparable sales to current gen systems years after the PS3 was released.  Same can be said of Ninty's older systems.  Again, Persona 4 JUST came out.  And Sony still makes the system new.  It is STILL in demand and still gets a gem amidst teh shovelware every now and then.  It's hard to say it's lifespan is over while staring those facts in the face, at least to me.

See Outlawauron gets it. I believe this is because his avatar and sig have Selvaria Bles in it. Epic win.

What do you guys think about the iQue? The N64's China version? It is not an emulator, it is N64 hardware, but it uses flash cards instead of carts. Still being sold today according to Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IQue_Player

Lifespan is the production life of the console.

Support is the production life of software for said console.

Example.

Console A is made from 200X till 200Y
after 200Y the console's life span is over
but every year after that the console sees support in the form of software and updates is simply support.

What do you consider support? Producing the console or making software for the console? Or a combination of both?

The lifespan lasts as long as it still sells signifficant software.

 Define "significant".

Define "it".  The hardware, software?  What counts as discontinued, when repairs stop?

Sorry to be picky! But I'd like to get a consensus on "lifespan".

PC + Wii owners unite.  Our last-gen dying platforms have access to nearly every 90+ rated game this gen.  Building a PC that visually outperforms PS360 is cheap and easy.    Oct 7th 2010 predictions (made Dec 17th '08)

Support = Producing the unit while a healthy amount of software is being produced.

Sony is still supporting the PS2. Sending out millions of units and it still gets tons of game. Nintendo supported the Gamecube up until early 2007 I'd say after the release of Twilight Princess.

Software really isn't the key as much as the hardware, because we are talking the lifespan of that hardware in question.

The start of the lifetime is when the console and its games are first sold in stores.

The end of the lifetime is when the original manufacturer stops producing the console, or stops making games for the console, whichever comes last.
