Rare went bad long before MS bought them out. A good chunk of people left in 97, them more left in 98-99 and formed Free Radical.

Say what you will, but 1997-2001 (or 2000, I forget when Conker's Bad Fur Day came out) is often treated as a golden period for them. granted, a lot of that is probably nostalgia from people who cut their eye teeth on the N64, but... well, Conker was awesome anyway.

But most off those games were pretty well into development by the time those staff losses occured.  PD, for example, was well on its way by the time some of its key staff members left to create Free Radical.  Banjo Tooie was a sequel, meaning less need for original work, and it was only a month behind PD.  2001 sees CBFD, but it seems to me as if that game was in development forever before finally being released, and it was only 5 months behind BT itself.  Those golden years were just the tail-end effect of those staff members and the impact they had early in each of those games' dev cycle.  After that, they fell apart fast.

Well, I can't really argue with that.

Yes, Rare was better with Nintendo.

Same people bashing rare, are the same people who haven't played Viva Pinata and the new Banjo. Goulies was not great, PD0 was ok for a launch title, as was Kameo. However the newest two games have been fantastic.

There is undoubtedly a lot of truth to this. I'm not sure why some gamers see the need to hate Rare because they are no longer with Nintendo. With the exception of PDZ every game they have released on the 360 has been of high quality. While those who compare the reviews against those on the N64 are apparently unaware of how the review system works. The 360 and N64 were primarily targetted towards different types of gamers - and reviewers target their reviews at these gamers. Lower reviews are therefore not necesarily an indication of lower quality - but that should have been self-evident.

Debating with fanboys, its not
all that dissimilar to banging ones
head against a wall

We're not hating on Rare. We're just reflecting that their glory days are over, which, in terms of market relevance, Peter Moore acknowledged was true.

yes u r i have had to defend rare several times in this thread

I don't think they are considered a failure right now. I mean how could they be with Microsoft pumping so many resources into them for so many years. I would say though that they probably won't be pushing out 2 AAA titles at a time anymore. They were almost as big as Nintendo was at producing games. In fact, I think they defined the N64 better than even Nintendo did, and I don't think that anybody can deny that at the time MS bought them, they were going through a HUGE rough spot.  I mean, look at it this way, would you see Rare being thought of as ever being anywhere close to "defining" an Xbox console?  They just aren't that strong anymore.  Not many of the greats are anymore.

So explain Wii review scores.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

Come on, there is no game from Rare in Xbox360 equivalent to what GoldenEye007, Perfect Dark, Banjo Kazzoie or Donkey Kong 64 were on their days.
The games I have written above would be the equivalent to Gears of War, Call of Duty or GTA4, related to importance, quality and sales (obviously the content is not the same).
Perfect Darl Zero, Kameo, Banjo 3 or Banjo 3 are irrelevant games if they are compared with Halo, Gears of War or Fable.
