Forums - Nintendo - RARE without Nintendo is not what it was to be....

I always thought the sale of rare was something that MS and Rare wanted (nintendo had alot of stock in rare)

Rare was tired of Nintendo telling them what to do, and I think the change of Dinosaur Planet to Star Fox Adventures was the last straw.. I think it was kinda like Chad Johnson in the NFL demanding a trade, and the organization does it because it knew it could get alot of money for it.

Nintendo got much more for Rare, than they ever produced for the MS consoles... That got a great deal. MS got ripped off.

Also, yes I know retro had other promising "looking" games, that was my point they are artistically talented. Arc Blade (was that the name), and the Football game would have sucked imo, there is a reason nintendo canned them when they stepped in.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

RARE's new games are good, just not as good as the old ones.

PREDICTIONS:
(Predicted on 5/31/11) END of 2011 Sales - Xbox 360 = 62M;  PS3 = 59M;  Wii = 97M

@Bigjon.

Raven Blade was the title and no, I don't think it would have sucked at all. They got canned because Metroid Prime needed the resources. MP was actually coming along very poorly because the 60 man studio couldn't put enough people on the project.

Miyamoto (yeah, him) decided the project needed the whole focus of the studio so the other titles were dropped.

MP was considered of very poor quality in the early builds until the studio put everyone on it which as we now know was a fantastic move because MP eventually became absolutely brilliant.

I haven't seen anybody in here say Rare isn't any good anymore.

What we're all saying, is that they aren't nearly anywhere near as good as they used to be.

And for the guy who asked earlier about staff leaving after the microsoft aquisition, I believe the two founders left weeks after Microsoft bought them out.

Maybe they got rid of them cause one of the main things in rare's games were state of the art graphics & that wasn't really part of nintendo's strategy anymore?

Either way, i miss them too, they should come back :p

No.

Stamper brothers wanted to sell their quotes of Rare so they offered them to Nintendo ( Nintendo "only" had 49% ).

Nintendo saw it wasn't worth buy Rare so they let know to Stamper brothers that they could sell Rare to another company.

Stamper brothers gave to Nintendo US$ 100 millions , plus "their" most lucrative IP ( Donkey Kong  ).

Nintendo left al the other IPs created by Rare to them. Then Stamper brothers sold Rare for US$ 377 million to Microsoft.

Everyone knows how commecially succesfull was Rare after their department from Nintendo.

PS: I think Nintendo at the time paid US$ 40 million to get 49% of Rare.

Didn't a bit of Rare's staff jump ship after it changed hands?

I seem to recall that as well, but a quick Google search didn't reveal anything.  The Wikipedia entry didn't show much either.  Most of the staff departures listed on the Wiki happened a few years before they were sold to Microsoft.  Maybe they were already on their way downhill when Microsoft bought them.

Is there a member out there who could clear this up?

I remember calling Rare weakening when they left Nintendo back in what 2000? 2001? Anyways, I always thought there greatness was a combination of their own techinical talent (why their graphics rocked) and Nintendo's imput and Nintendo just has that knack for making games more fun (heck they even made Wii Music fun)

I think the same could be said for Retro. They would be nothing without Nintendo, look at what they were before...

Retro Studios was already making a number of promising-looking GameCube titles, some sort of ARPG, racing game, football (American) game.

Of course, they wouldn't have made the best game of all time, but it wouldn't have been ruinous

Retro was in deep shit at that time. They had a lot of projects on development but there wasn't a clear idea of what to do of those games and the managment waasn't good.

Then Nintendo decided to fully buy them.

When they did it Nintendo cancelled all the projects, give them the Metroid  franchise to work on under Miyamoto supervision and fired the Retro president.
