If Rareware games (back then) and Crash Bandicoot sold well in Japan (just a few examples), obviously they're not totally opposed to Western games.
Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!
Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

I truly do not understand it either. Oh wells *goes to play naruto UNS2, then fallout: new vegas*

The age old question. I have pointlessly philosophized on this question, but after wracking my brain I still find myself at square one.
I honestly don't believe the West has put out a game which appeals to Japanese gamers like whisky appeals to Japanese bar hoppers.
Maybe if the video game gave out shots of whiskey and was full of cute pandas, koalas, and rabbits in cowboy suits, then it may catch on in Japan.
Cute is to Japan what realism is to the West.
Someone who knows Japan please help me and tell me if I am on the right track.

In just the last few years, Japan has developed: Street Fighter 4 Resident Evil 5 Gran Turismo 5 Bayonetta Vanquish Metal Gear Solid 4 Demon's Souls Ninja Gaiden Sigma Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 Devil May Cry 4 Valkyria Chronicles Super Mario Galaxy Kirby Epic Yarn Donkey Kong Country Returns and the list of amazing games coming out of Japan goes on and on. They are as good as American developers and just because the Western media has some sort of weird bias against most Japanese games, it doesn't mean they aren't as good.

Actually DKC R is made mostly by Retro, a western developer. They had video sessions with some of the developers from Nintendo in Japan according to the Iwata Asks on the game, but it was mostly madfe by Retro. It is more of a question of game type and genre and not if it is western or japanese.

Above: still the best game of the year.
