Forums - Nintendo - Will Nintendo image change if........

I was just wondering if Nintendo's image would change if they were to develop and or allow more mature rated games like (No More Heroes, RE 4, MadWorld, etc.) in the Wii's library? Since the Wii is kicking so much hash in sales could Nintendo's image differ or would it stay as it is now, basically a family casual system?

The problem isn't that Nintendo is discouraging Mature games or that it needs more Mature games.  Its that Third Parties are shying away from the system and focusing their major projects (and M rated projects) on the other systems.  It doesn't need to change its image or get more Mature games, it just needs more Third Party support.  And from the Third Party support it does get, something better than 'Imagine: Babyz' or 'Carnival Games' or 'Port of PS2 game with Waggle Features added'.

And as sales have shown, the majority of people who own or play Wii don't view it has an 'image problem'.  The people labeling it as such are the internet community or those subscribing to the 'console wars'.

As stated above, Nintendo will let any rating on their system other than AO.

Nintendo just doesn't make very many M rated games themselves since Nintendo's whole philosophy is games are for everyone. Since they want everyone to enjoy their games, they tend to make games in the E-T range. This is also part of the reason Nintendo manages to sell so many games all the time. By making their games for everyone, they have a larger population to sell their games to.

That make a lot of sense. But what I don't like about Nintendo is that making games for everyone is not only making games that everybody can play. Nintendo could develop more mature titles that could easily be milion seller or they could just pay good developers to make some. But either way, Nintendo would just be even more respected and loved by most gamers. In fact,  I think Nintendo is the only one who can really gather to every one, but unfortunately they seems to forget a part of the audience.  Don't get me wrong, I love my mario galaxy but I think Nintendo could come up more often with something like the Conduit or madworld.

Unlike on the GC where they were funding second parties and third parties to make games (including some more darker themes 'T' games), now they are takingthe approach that they will work more internally to make a solid system with a ton of powerful IPs.  And there's no doubt it has worked.  They have produced more solid games from their own company in 3 years than any time in their history.  And on a system that is still flying off the shelves.

The groups that were suppose to provide the Mature, Teen and 'other' types of games were the Third Parties.  But they never showed up.  Aside from weak outings to make a quick buck.

It's only been two years and two months (give or take) since Nintendo's image stopped being a complete joke, and even then, the gaming public still gives it only grudging respect for its successes. To change perceptions takes time.

In Nintendo's case, they set the standard for their own platforms. What they publish, others will publish. Not necessarily down to the letter (i.e., we haven't gotten exact Wii Sports clones or zero-g platformers), but the general tone of the platform (target demographics, etc) are set by Nintendo themselves.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Nintendo's image has remained practically the same for the last 20 or so years: family-friendly and mostly targeted towards a younger audience. That's not really going to change now, I think, even with all the women and grandparents joining in on the fun.

Nintendo's image just went through a huge change.

And can anyone think of a good "AO" rated game?

Plumbers Don'tWear Ties and Mind Teazer (3D0).

Was going to say the PC extended version of Leisure Suit Larry MCL (PC), but I remembered it was LSL.

Back to the OP -- Nintendo has never published many M-rated games. On the GC, I can only think of two: Eternal Darkness (which everyone would like to see a sequel for) and Geist (which went over so well that developer n-Space could not find a publisher for survival horror proposed game Winter).

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

If there are not a lot of M games in the wii is not Nintendo's fault but the 3d parties who just see the wii as a "retard" console. Time will show how mistaken they are.

And Nintendo won't make games with M because they aim to everybody (not only kids) so I doubt that will change from them.

There won't be a serious number of "M" or PEGI 18+ games on the Wii until there is at least one hugely successful (on the Wii) game with that rating on the Wii. The 3rd parties won't risk it until then, and Nintendo doesn't seem to want to publish horror games anymore, unless Luigi is the main character, and it mostly only scares kids.

The days when Mature content was a good thing are over.

Nintendo's image will not change, and it shouldn't. If it does they will lose a lot of their advantage.

Sure, there are M-rated games, but the image will not change because it's a good image. The inherent problem with Nintendo's prior image was a lack of adult players, Nintendo solved that problem by appealing to true maturity, people who were over 30 or 80. For which the M rating plays no positive role.

A focus on M-rated content would drive these more mature audiences away from the console, not closer. And thus a new, more damaging stereotype would be prevalent. Nintendo wants to be pro-social, gaming of old including Microsoft and Sony wants to be anti-social. Now that we have a different political and gaming climate, the latter will eventually fall into market obscurity. PUSHING M-rated games is the last thing Nintendo, or anyone in their right mind, wants to do going forward.

I think you hit the jackpot with that post. I just thought the sentence that I highlighted in blue is a little questioning. I would like to know what verdict have given you the synopsis of Microsoft and Sony's gaming being "anti-social". Would a vast number of M-rated games or any rated game define a systems audiance?
