Forums - Gaming - Nintendo responsible for the "Biggest Coup in Gaming history"

Thanks Nintendo Fanboy, it is my first one. And I've read so many great ones from others on this site and figured I'd give it a shot.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

Who started the Nintendo is kiddie stigma? Sega. Followed by 3DO and then Sony.

Sega, 3DO and Sony directly targeted Nintendo in attack TV advertisements that asserted Nintendo as kiddie. That's a stigma you can't shake when your demographic is everyone.

Sega railed on the SNES no blood Mortal Kombat. 3DO showed a SNES being tossed into a toy chest. Sony had Crash Bandicoot calling Mario "Plumber Boy" via a loudspeaker in front of the NOA headquarters.

I've seen the old Sega TV ads that asserted this, but I don't recall seeing ads from the other companies that did.

Here's the 3DO one:

Edit: And here's the Bandicoot Commercial:

Great post. But I'm curious, I've heard too much times that the Nes was also said to be a fad, and hated by the hardcore gamers of that time.... but it's that true? I don't remember those things because I was a kid.

Anyone who played the Commodore 64 or other systems experienced this? And if so, how much time passed until the Nes was accepted by those people?

Well the internet didn't exist then, now peple can be anonymous and bash whatever they want,( most of them Kiddies themselves )

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

I liked the Crash ads. They didn't do anything to make me want to play the series, but I did get a kick out of them.

I don't think Nintendo was considered "kiddy" till later but Atari did try to downplay ROB:

I thought Sony held that title, because for a while, Nintendo and Sega were in a gridlock, and then the PS1 not only usurped them both, but it became the first console to reach 100 million sold.

How is a giant, multi-national corporation muscling its way into an industry surprising?

OT: I think the nintendo deserves that title. After all, analysts assumed they were going to go 3rd party and exit the console market like Sega did. But, they ended up beating one company that can leverage movie and music studios, and one company that has almost an endless amount of money.

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."

"The so-called "hardcore" gamer is a marketing brainwashed, innovation shunting, self-righteous idiot who pays videogame makers far too much money than what is delivered."

I agree Griffin, The Wii is a massive cinderella story.

You know what i just realize nintendo even though been in the gaming community for a long time I haven't really seen much of them directly attacking the competition through advertisement. I remember the the attack from sega, turbo graph 16, 3d0, sony, atari, and even the neo geo. I havent really seen one made by nintendo though. Seems like they always got attacked.
