I only just noticed this thread, would have posted before otherwise. It pretty much covers Sega up until when they exited hardware manufacturing, unfortunately it misses quite a bit of the Mega Drive era.

Ah yes... I knew I could count on you to post that. You have no basis whatsoever to state such thing, yet you always do it, every 3 months like a clockwork. Sometimes I do wonder how it feels to live in a land of fantasy where MS is just a lossy, poorly managed company while Sony is the world's example of shining collaboration between research and business triumph.

So do you know what's earning and what's losing in EDD and how much?

And do you know how much every division contributes to losses accounted for in "Corporate level activity" balance item?

No, but you look like the kind of guy who knows what general overseed the removal of Roswell's charred remains.

Any other conspiracy theory about MS financial statements? Maybe the keys to the Temple of Salomon are coded into the Office Unit revenue?

The most serious theory I've ever seen about Roswell was Futurama episode "Roswell that ends well"

About MS balance sheets: no theory, like many, I'd like to know a little bit less vaguely where losses accounted for in "Corporate level activity" come from. I asked a question and you put answers in my mouth? Anyhow, vague balance item apart, MS balances are public, so everybody can read them, see how divisions were organized in the past and their profits or losses, etc. and see that Windows, Office, IIS and services have always been cash cows across the years, while every other product and division, well, let's simply say, not always (and I could have been much more malicious if I were a fanboy).

That episode won an Emmy, by the way. Always in everyone's top 5 episodes, a true classic.

Anyways, you were implying MS was using the overhead expenses to hide X360 related losses, which is kind of conspirational-ly. Sony also has overhead expenses, Nintendo has overhead expenses. Assuming just because it is Microsoft it must be doing something fishy falls within the realms of tin-foil hattery.

Fishy not really, a little bit reticent and less than completely transparent, but within legal limits, yes. It's cosmetics, we know many companies do it, pretending only MS doesn't would be quite naïve.

Edit: about bolded part: yes, they have, but MS EDD division including a lot of heterogeneous things added to separate overhead expenses including in a big cauldron legal expenses, settlements and fines, R&D, support and service costs, etc makes a lot more difficult to tell what's profiting and what's not inside EDD itself. Conspiration theory would be suggesting some outlandish explanation to facts, and I'm not doing it, but facts remain, and they are that we can't tell for sure what's producing losses inside EDD, as we know that SW retail versions produce profits, Win CE/Mobile probably too, at last, and keyboard and mice too.

with that kind of money why does nintendo only stay a game company??
you would think that since they can run a company so well even when they are "losing" they would move into other industries and do the same.

computers anyone??

Nintendo is actually over 100 years old.  Their main income was hanafuda playing cards but they also dealt in love hotels (I'm nto kidding), a cab company, a TV network, rice and some other ventures.

Never once in all those 100+ years have they posted a loss (they've only had one negative quarter ever and it was solely because of the exchange rate).

Now they focus almost exclusively on video games (they still own the Seattle Mariners baseball club) and as you can see has been highly successful for them.  Better to stick with what works than to diversify and lose continuity and cohesion.

Would be nice if they invested some of that cash into the team though. -.-

The BKK tables really show how hard the Saturn and Dreamcast came crashing down on Sega.

@BKK2

Thanks! I tried but I never could find Sega Numbers.

1989 - 1994 numbers come from "Video Games: A report on the supply of video games in the UK" from Competition Commission. The page you posted was Chapter 6.

1992 - 2002 numbers come from "CONTEMPORARY STRATEGY ANALYSIS" by ROBERT M. GRANT. Heres their latest pdf: Case Eleven.

I'll put them on the chart. Again this is very useful thanks BKK2.

very interesting chart. thanks for the info. i'm surprised to see Nintendo has almost always made more money than sony.

Not a 360 fanboy, just a PS3 fanboy hater that likes putting them in their place ^.^
