Choice or not, the point wasn't whether the PS3 helped the consumer but rather whether it helped Sony themselves or not. Furthermore, for a console to be successful (at least a Playstation console), its needs the market's majority or at least a sizeable sum, something it can't achieve as a luxury "choice" item. Why do you think the man who designed it was forced to resign (or was he demoted) after its release?
What the PS3 does for Sony remains to be judged 5 years from now. Remember all the "PS2 is Doomed" stories from when the PS2 launched and all the criticism for using a DVD drive (at the time I stated on forums it was a good choice). |
Spot on! I had a launch ps2 and people were doom saying that as well. It was expensive, no games and who needs dvd. Problem is Sony is always thinking future and to me that is good. MS should of learnt this (instead of rushing out) and now they have embarrassed themselves buy adding more extras to their sku.
If you think BD is not going to be needed or is not going to take off? Well every time I go to blockbuster the Blu-ray collection is getting bigger (I'm in Australia - it isn't as big as the USA or Europe for BD yet). So that tells me it's going to impact.
Also people should know that Sony has a strategy. Why be the winner of Now. It don't mean shit. It's how you finish the race. All I see is cocky 360 fans saying the 360 the best and unstoppable and Wii fan boys that are so cocky now they think that Nintendo games are the best games ever created (they are the same as I played as a kid). Oh and casuals - If they do become gamers I bet you they will look at real games on the ps3 or 360. The Wii will always be a second choice console for most consumers imho.
I have faith in Sony and I know they have the foresight and the long term strategy that will win them the long term goal. 360 is almost dead (Halo, Geowars etc prolly the climax) and the Wii will soon run out of steam. Ps3 is just starting and soon ppl will realize this. Either way Sony will win the next gen because it will offer the most quality, reliability, and the leader of the last gen user base. Which is massive.
