Forums - Sales - Why dragon quest isn't popular in West?

@Johan: FFIV is more than 10 years old game and it´s been used in every FF until X. People didn´t complain about it being old . CTB was more near to a traditional turn-based system, it actually didn´t play much differently than DQVIII. Overpowered is no fun to me, it takes out all the fun.

Many jrpg franchises sells more in US than in Japan(FF, KH, e SO). Why dragon quest isn't capable to sell a million in west alone?

Unlke those other ones, western gamers can see how dated and lame this particular brand of JRPG is. It should be caled 'Cliche : The Video Game'.

You are an idiot.

And you're a douche bag who says things without providing any argument.  I hate dissing you because of your Bruce Campbell icon.  But yeh DQ makes the same game over and over like madden.  Provide an argument back perhaps.

Last year's game of the year turned out to be Silent Hill : Shattered Memories (online GOTY was COD 6).  This year's GOTY leader to me is Heavy Rain.

When FFIX came out, FFIV wasn't a 10 year old game. They both came out in the 90's.

Largely, I suspect, because fewer Westerners like the slower, more methodical pace of DQ games. They want non-stop ZOMGACTION, and other series have moved to provide that.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

@Pyramid Head

That's funny, I've played most of the DQ games, and I could swear that I was playing different games..!

I'm sorry for calling you an idiot. I had written a response, but decided to delete everything and go with the idiot comment cause I knew you probably wouldn't listen, seeing you called an entire genre "lame", based only on personal taste.

You're obviously not a fan, so when you criticise the genre, you're not trying to be constructive, you're trying to feel like you have superior taste than all the people who buy the game. Fans of the genre are allowed to criticise it, cause they want to see the genre grow. Haters of the genre like yourself want to see it crash and burn. They should just not comment.

Honestly, I think the game just has the perception of being dated. And I can't speak for Japan, but Western society in general is fast paced and perhaps the slow pace doesn't appeal to them. Different cultural sensibilities?

You make a good point.  I was being a hater.

I do like some JRPGS like Chrono Trigger, and the more tactical ones like J'eanne Darc.  I guess I meant the melodramatic ones with simple fighting.

Because DQ requires you to grind and has a difficulty bent to it. Westerners want easy rpgs like Fable...

yeah and games like Lost Odyssey... oh wait that game was hard and almost impossible without grinding in some parts !

How man? Outside of the first two bosses, the game was a cakewalk.

But I will say that Toriyama character designs are getting old and annoying.
