Forums - Sony - PS3 fans ridiculously hyping ps3 games, whats wrong about it?

twingo said:
guess fanboys are still jealous of the PS3, right op.

It must be easy to attempt a high five with the OP instead of actually providing anything of substance to the topic. I, among others, made some very good points as to what's wrong with the level of hype you folks use and you chalk it up to jealousy? Really? Well what excuse will you use for me considering I'm a PS3 owner?

Be nice to the little Sack :,,,(

I have nothing against the Sack. You honestly can't say that advertising budget couldn't have been better spent on Resistance 2, Motorstorm Pacific Rift and SOCOM Confrontation though. If they were to have halfed the ad budget from LBP and spread it accordingly across the other three titles, I feel while LBP probably would have lost maybe half it's sales, the others would have increased greatly to the point that much more money would have been in Sony's pocket. Lose 800,000, and maybe gain 3 million. It was boneheaded for them to back the least marketable game in their Fall lineup as the headliner.

To be fair, LBP was the best game in the PS3's holiday lineup by far...

Not really marketable, not appealing to the PS3's audience, but definitely better than the others. SOCOM turned out to be buggy, Pacific Rift didn't do particularly well. Using metacritic as a source of reviewer opinion:

Resistance 2: 87

MotorStorm: Pacific Rift: 81

SOCOM: Confrontation: 62

LittleBigPlanet: 95

They made the mistake of thinking a great game will always sell great numbers. Having said that, though, for what LBP is, the fact that it will cross 2 million, and probably 3 million, is nothing short of astonishing.

OT: They hear a few people saying Killzone 2 will save the PS3, and then assume that nobody can like it because it's a great game, only because it will "save" their console. That's part of it. I think (see, it is in PS3 fans' vocabulary )a part of it is jealousy, the fact that they won't be able to play Killzone 2. Part of it is Sony hate.

Aha, overhype. Entirely different from hype. Saying Killzone 2 will be a fantastic game, and saying it will be a Halo killer, are two entirely different things.

I have personally never claimed the latter, but many people here have. Yes, it will be fantastic. Yes, it has a good chance of being better than Halo. But that's not the point. The whole _ Killer phrase shouldn't be used until AFTER a game has been released.

If and when Killzone 2 is as awesome as it's being hyped to be (we now have some concrete evidence at least http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ps3/killzone2) THEN we can call it a Halo killer.

You know what I find more annoying than overhype, though? What I like to call Haze Syndrome. Sufferers seem to think that every single PS3 exclusive that is going to be released in the future is going to be crap, because Haze and Lair were crap.

Um...no. TWO GAMES in the PS3's entire exclusive library flop relative to expectations, and now every game is going to flop? Of course, Killzone 2 will flop because it's an FPS, like Haze and Resistance 2 (which of course is a flop, despite being a million seller), and because it's on PS3, like Haze and LBP (which of course is a flop, despite being nearly a double million seller).

The term "flop" seems to have been adjusted to mean "not a week one million seller", which like I said, I find much more annoying than hype. Can you honestly tell me only Sony fans do this? There's a nice thread in the Gaming Discussion: Can The Conduit outsell Killzone 2?

You'd be shocked at the number of "Of course it will" answers.

Saying "Be fair" because LBP was the best game of the four is merely spin. I'm talking where advertising money should have gone and "the best game" isn't necessarily the most marketable. You don't need to give LBP the benefit of the doubt or anything because I'm not ragging on the game. I'm just saying it was in poor judgement to anchor the Fall lineup with your fourth most marketable game out of four games. You can't try to create some 2D platformer with creation tools and think this will gather that extended audience that goes all crazy over the little white box. LBP should have gotten a modest ad budget in the light of Sony's financial troubles and have it sell whatever it would have sold in favor of giving the major campaigns to Resistance 2 and Motorstorm, with a decent slice for SOCOM so those three could have raked in some more money. LBP should never have been outselling the two full price releases and probably should have been where SOCOM is right now while Motorstorm and Res 2 should be closer to where LBP is, or even further.

There is nothing wrong with hyping games. Like I said it is just another freedom of speech and you cant take that away from anyone.

The industry thrives on hype, if there was no hype then would be no reason to make games because people dont talk about them.

Thats like asking 360 owners not to hype Halo, Gears, or any of their other exclusives and asking Nintendo gamers not to hype the next Zelda, Metroid, Mario, or Star Fox. Thats boderline crazy because it will show the industry that people are not interested in the games.

Just a lot of double standards thrown around by fanboys. Say if KZ 2 was exclusive to 360, it would recieve far more hype that is is recieving now due to MS's insane marketing.

There will be no PS4

Resistance 2 is a flop relative to expectations set by Sony. There's no need to use your own definitions when Sony themselves set the bar higher than any ridiculous fanboy on here could. Being profitable does not mean a game isn't a flop. 1.2 million for Resistance 2 is ridiculously low considering how well FPS can sell on the console, including the first Resistance. You can attempt to spin it any way you want but it doesn't change how poorly the game has sold relative to expectations. Are you telling me if Halo 4 was selling like Res 2 is right now, it wouldn't be considered a flop? Of course it would, and just because it was able to break a small profit does not make it any less of a flop for a title capable of so much more.

People are calling Resistance 2 a flop now?
It's only selling about 3 times faster than the original and from what I've heard, it's a much better game.

Edit: Not quite 3 times as fast, but this graph says a lot: http://vgchartz.com/swlaunch.php?reg1=All&game1=Resistance%3A+Fall+of+Man+-+PS3&reg2=All&game2=&reg3=All&game3=Resistance+2+-+PS3&weeks=100

As for LBP, I guess being Sony's highest rated game ever isn't enough. How many reasonable people were expecting it to sell more than 3-4 million? While we're at it, we might aswell call Wii a failure too, as it's so far failed to match John Lucas' insane predictions.
