Forums - Sony - Why is Valkyria Chronicles soo GOOD?

I only had ONE negative aspect and that was the unlimited counter-attacks when it's your or the AI's turn.

Actually I think that this is a great positive point of VC, for it's totally unrealistic the enemy would do nothing but wait for you to attack while you are moving and I think it makes the battles in VC far more intense and immersive.

AFAIK turn based games are never 100% realistic....

I mean they are allowed to shoot my selected character when it's my turn, but they aren't allowed to crouch or move ?

Why are they stop shooting when I aim at them ? And why are they only allowed to shoot at my active character and not my passive characters ? (I know that would possibly destroy any tactical aspects and mostlikely the fun, but it's simply illogical)

One counter attack is fair, but not unlimited.....

simply my opinion.....

Actually Advance Wars (all of them) had recieved better reviews and sold better than Valkyria Chronicles, so your arguments are meaningless

According to VGChartz (shown below) Valkyria Chronicles is 4x more popular in Japan than Advance Wars (which only Dual Strike was released in Japan). If we look in the US (only other place with sales information for Advance Wars) Advance Wars is 3-4x more popular than VC. Since we don't have others data, we can't compare over there, but overall VC will probably end up selling similar amounts to the two advance wars games once you factor in Others.

Valkyria Chronicles

Region Japan America Others Total
Total Sales 0.16m 0.09m 0.08m 0.33m

Advance Wars: Dual Strike

Region Japan America Others Total
Total Sales 0.04m 0.30m 0.00m 0.34m

Advance Wars: Days of Ruin

Region Japan America Others Total
Total Sales 0.00m 0.38m 0.00m 0.38m

Your picking cherries. V_V unless I'm missing something, one speaks of reviews the other speaks of sales; in the end your talking about acceptance, but your speaking specifically for Japan? I'm pretty sure Barozi is speaking some form of English... and I'm pretty sure Japan isn't an English speaking country despite who owned them before 2000 was it?

In the end up to your post, Barozi wasn't incorrect, your spinning me around though; nothing personal.

Those numbers are shocking... I mean Advanced wars did start out on the NES... and wasn't released outside of America.

Had Japan only SNES and Gameboy iterations too.

read the bolded part. He brought up sales, so I just pointed out that the sales of VC aren't all that much worse than Advance Wars. In the end, I think they will have similar sales if we assume Others had less sales than America, which I think is the case, since Fire Emblem seems to always bomb over there too.

Battalion Wars and advanced wars aren't the same at all, I've read an article but by Joe I can't remember it specifically - it dealt with Battalion Wars 1 being rejected by Japan in it's mock up version, until it was redone and the developer later claimed the series would not feature play style similar to Advance Wars because this game is not related to Advance Wars.

In other words they share the same commonality as Starcraft does to Warcraft - NONE!

@norlead

Fine, but their was a fair out of nit picking in your post none the less or maybe you just didn't feel the need to point the other things out... granted you did mention trends in your response so I guess everything is fair.

VC is doing very well for itself and in relation Advance Wars flunked just going by the install bases.

Quite honestly.... I LOVE VC.

However... it sounds like Radha would hate this game from his tastes.

I wish people would pay attention to what people say they like and don't like rather then just try and sell people on a game they probably won't like just because they like it and want it to sell more.

The thing about SRPGs is... not many people like them.

Because there is little beyond the battles and dialogue scenes spliced between the battles.

Well, I enjoyed VC a lot, however like anything else based on opinion, no one should expect others to share them.

Most people who think others should share their opinions seem to be too needy. V_V

I was asked today what video game is my favorite, I said: "I don't know, I just have a group of games I don't like and anything not on that list is good." Kind of makes me think that maybe I'm just playing video games for that one game that will be my favorite - I hope others like it too. =P

Yep. They have to enjoy the gameplay. If they don't enjoy the strategy part, they won't get the story part.....

On the other hand most people are repelled just hearing the word "tactical RPG" because of the grid system, the complexity of the gameplay, the endless menus you have to browse each time you want to perform an attack, or the fact that basically the only way to win is by overpowering your opponent.

I know some JRPG fans who loath tactical JRPG, they find them boring and too time consuming, BUT these same people love VC.

You're right when you say we shouldn't try to rub our tastes on others, but it's not because Radha said he loves free roaming and don't like tacticals that he won't like this game. Actually if he is into turn base battles or third person action in general he might very well like it.

@Radha rather than trying to explain it to you, here is what it looks like when playing Valkyria Chronicles : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKjz6CAUS4w

@Barozi

Of course the game is not 100% realistic, it woud be called a TPS if it were...

As for your points, if one of your inactive character gets caught up into crossfire while your moving another one, it gets damages and can even die.

and if you hide behind an enemy that can't shoot (sniper, cannon/gatteling gun, lancer) you can kill a whole bunch of people with 1 CP point and still be able to fire at someone

There's something to be said for trying new games and new experiences though.

Sometimes you enjoy them and sometimes you don't.

If you're not sure if you like sRPGs then try Valkyria Chronicles and find out.
