Forums - Sony - Can PS3 survive to the N64 situation?

I personally don't think Sony's first party games hold a candle to the N64's first party efforts, so in that regard no. But Sony doesn't have to rely completely on itself like Nintendo had to. The ps3 has received stronger third party support than the N64 (or GameCube)ever did so...

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

PS3 is not similar to the N64. There are games coming out for it. Not exclusively anymore, but they're still coming out.

Quem disse que a boca é tua?

Qual é, Dadinho...?

Dadinho é o caralho! Meu nome agora é Zé Pequeno!

Yes, now Sony is still receiving strong 3rd party support, but the development of those games started before the PS3 launching, when everybody believed that PS3 would be the console leader. What about the future, do you keep thinking that it would be the same? That question does not mean that I know the answer, in fact, I don't.

ohh god why why.

20 million kid, no dev is forgetting about that user base.  If its on 360 it will be on PS3 and vise versa.

Fact is only the wii gets left out.

PS3 has MUCH MORE 3rd Party support than the N64 could'vve ever dreamed off

n it isn't loosing 3rd Party support anywhere

so I dunno what your talking about

the PS3 has much more competition than the N64 could have ever dreamed of. The power of the Wii and 360 is greater than that of the PSX. Heck the Wii alone could do the job.

People dont buy a console that cost twice as much if all the games the avergae games wants are on the other console. The Multiplat system naturally favors the cheaper console. I mean really, If GTA4, FFX13, DMC, were still sony exclusive then do you think things would look a little different right now?

Also they have LOST some. DQX, possible KH3, and all those RPGs that MS bought kinda say hello...

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

The market is far bigger now. Though the Wii could be bigger than the PS2 (and will be bigger than the PS1) the competitors will do far better as well all 3 consoles are selling well

The situation is different. Nintendo had driven a number of third parties into bankruptcy during the days of the SNES due to the way they priced carts.

It used to be that a third party would have to buy X number of carts from nintendo whether or not they actually sold any of them. And at $20 a cart you would have to basically bet the company with every new game release.

When other platforms offered freedom from cart hell, all of the third parties jumped as fast as they could.

And don't forget that Sony also lost Monster Hunter 3...

The OP never suggested the sales of the N64 and PS3 would be the same, he just suggested the situation would be. So market growth is not as important.

The n64 was successful but hugely disapointing because it was so much less than the SNES, the PS3 is seeing fine sales, but considering where it was last gen... it is very disapointing.

I really think the PS3 will go on to sell 40-50 million consoles which would put it in the SNES's range, but is the PS3 going to be as successful as the SNES... heck no.

Exact, that is the point. I have never said the PS3 is the N64. I am wondering what would Sony do if they only had as a choice their 1st party software to survive just like Nintendo had to do a few years ago with N64. How far do you think PS3 would arrive?
