Forums - Sony - Can PS3 survive to the N64 situation?

Before the console war started there were many games in development and PS3 benefitted from this ( FFXIII, RE5, GTA4, MGS4 ... ). Once the war had started, PS3 started losing the exclusivity of many games due to his 'no huge sales'. At this point, I find the PS3 in the same situation that the N64 was ten years ago: Sony is losing 3rd party support and they must survive thanks to 1st party tittles.

N64 was even worst: it didn't lose exclusivity, directly it lost the game (FFVII, RE, DQ ...), so Nintendo had to fight with their own lineup:

-Super Mario 64

-GoldenEye007

-Mario kart 64

-The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

-Lylat Wars

-BanjoKazzoie

-Donkey Kong 64

-Super Smash Bros

-Get Force Gemini

-Perfect Dark

-Majora's Mask

.........

Some of those games were really system sellers and reached very high sales, allowing Nintendo survive and launch a new console five years later, despite the huge success of the PSX brand.

Now Sony is starting to realize that they cannot trust third party exclusivity and need their 1st party software to call the attention of the gamer and purchase their console:

-Uncharted

-Rachet&Clank

-God of War III

-Resistence

-Resistence2

-Motorstorm

-Motorstorm2

-Gran Turismo 5

-LittleBigPlanet

......

I only see a really system seller GT5. The other games can't reach the amazing sales that had Mario 64, Ocaina of Time, GoldenEye.... My point is that I don't see first party software from Sony to be as stronger as Nintendo one, and now Sony has to rely in fisrt party tittles. Let's see what ICO team have under their sleeve.

What do you think?

The PS3 still has tons of 3rd party support, just minimal 3rd party exclusive support. And PS3 is still selling at a good rate, at a very high price point. Of course PS3 can survive, look at its 2009 lineup already!

yea you can argue about how good nintendo 1st party is vs sony 1st party but PS3 is getting most of the multi-plats as well. People need to know though when you are comparing sales numbers that 32 million 2 gens ago is at like 50 million or more this gen. The market is growing quickly.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

Considering the monumental difference between Sony 1st/2nd-party games in this era and the N64-games you listed, as well as the fact that development costs are through the roof (atleast for PS3/360-games) right now, I think Sony are doing a lot worse than Nintendo did back then.

I mean, Sony's biggest such release so far is Resistance, right? Which is at like, 3,5m? Well, Mario 64 was at like 11m. Quite a difference.

Well, the system at least continues getting the vast majority of the so-called 'high profile' 3rd party titles, unlike the N64...so it can´t be 100% compared to the N64.

PS3 has MUCH MORE 3rd Party support than the N64 could'vve ever dreamed off

This..

Nintendo had a clear advantage with stonger first party games. Most of them sold over 6 million where as PS3 only really has gran turismo that can do the same. Ps3 also has fierce competion from micrososft. PS3 Will never profit because of it.

Sony aren't losing 3rd party support, they have just lost a lot of 3rd party exclusive support, there's a difference.

PS3 get's first party and 2nd party exclusives and all the 3rd party multi-plats which are the biggest games the 3rd parties have to offer.
