Forums - Sony - ps3 owners, what would you consider losing this generation?

ZenfoldorVGI said:
The real answer is simple. Sony "lost" this gen when they tacked on a BR player in an attempt to push the format. Sony has had the biggest swing towards the red of all the game manufacturers in the industry. It's monumental, the difference in popularity, sales, and profit between the PS2 and the PS3. To top it all off, Sony is also getting handily owned in the handheld arena at the same time. Add that to the fact that PS3 owners have very few good games to play in the first 1.5 years of the consoles lifecycle...

...well the question isn't if Sony lost this generation. The question is now, has Sony destroyed the Playstation brand beyond repair. It doesn't matter if Sony starts, today, to have the best games on any platform as exclusives and stomps the Xbox 360 into 3rd place for the rest of this generation. Sony went from a resoundingly first place finish to a dismal 3rd place company that is on the verge of financial disaster. They have also saddled the customer with the most appalling addon ever in an attempt to further another industry at the cost of the Playstation brand, and gamers in general.

Sony is morally reprehensible, to say the least. Business minded decisions always hurt the most when they come from those you love. Even if you don't freely admit that Sony has already irrevocably lost this generation in every way possible, it's impossible to pretend that they've actually won anything, in the past few years. The company has the most inept and traditional management in the business world, and they stand as a shining example of how not to run a business. There are better managed lemonade stands.

The question is in the title thread: As PS3 owners, what would we consider as a loss this generation?

This will only take a moment of your time. *steals your watch*

It should be pretty obvious for most: it depends on the way we're looking at it. Sales-wise, selling the least consoles this generation. Consumer-wise, not getting good games (shouldn't be a problem, though, as the userbase is sufficient even now). Sony-wise (or something), losing money. And please note that not losing does not equal winning and not the other way, either.

And also, if Sony sells a good amount of consoles, while upset that they were beaten, I doubt they would be too bothered. And as for the 70% market dominance, how long did ppeople expect that to go on with the richest company in the world as a competitor? I mean, we all remember that ludicrous Halo 3 marketing campaign....

Wow, I feel like most of these answers are treating Sony like kids on the soccer fields. "You didn't lose, the important thing was that you had fun!"

The question wasn't "what would make you feal like Sony failed dismally at everythign they set out to accomplish?". But that's the question that was answered. Most answers were basically the same, Sony hadn't lost unless the PS brand is destroyed and falls out of production forever. I don't understand how a distant 3rd in so many categories can qualify as "not losing."

As someone who enjoys games on all consoles, I feel this is how all 3 could be considered losers(considering where they are at present)

Nintendo: At this point if somehow their sales dropped way below the other two systems, and they ended up winning the generation by anything than a landslide, they're the loser.

Microsoft: If they squander the lead they have over the PS3 and allow it to even end on even footing, they're the loser.

Sony: Continuing on their current course, and not at least matching MS's marketshare makes them the loser. Infact, a strong case can be made for them beign a lower even if they captured 2nd place, but only my a small margin(which is pretty much their best case pie-in-the-sky scenario). Going from a dominant first place to even a barely second place win would be a loss in my book.

In short, I feel like Sony has to be the loser. Nintendo has already "won". And MS has greatly increased their marketshare, mindshare, and profitability. Even making a bit of a comeback, Sony has without question fallen 2 spots on the console "power rankings"

some good rpgs would be real nice...last gen rpg > this gen rpg...only one i see that's worth it on this gen would be star ocean and valkyria chronicles for now....buying 360 just for star ocean is a lose for me....lossof $300...sob...there goes 5 games i could have bought just for SO....

hopefully better rpgs do come out for this gen...can't wait for wkc and ffxiii series(all of them...ps3 and psp ftw)

Don't know what to say about losing. But with my game collection I feel like a winner.

For me, losing this generation would be Sony announcing that they will cease production of the ps3 and games for it, long before the 10yr plan comes to an end and also confirm that there will never be a ps4.

you're gonna be very disappointed then

what does that have to do with winning or losing this generation?

@puffy

What are you nostradamus or something? I doubt the PS3 and its games will be ceased, you can think otherwise, I could care less, But my god will people drop the discontinued bullshit?

hmmm let see, when every asian kid i know is on the 360 is when i know ps3 has failed big time, right now half and half of my asian friends have 360 and half got ps3, well actually a little more then half has a 360 so its more like around 30 percent of them has a ps3 and as ps3 being the "asian console" once all asians switch to 360 ps3 will surely be done. i say asian console because every asian i know has a ps2 and no xbox, and when 360 came out every asian i knew then had a ps3, many switch some didn't which are the 30 percent i'm referring too. and i feel the ps3 is a disgrace, however dont confuse it with me saying it sucks, its good but disgrace in that how does the best selling system ever since ps1 get raped by a newbie like the 360. so yea that is my definition of disgrace.

get raped by a newbie xbox 360.lol you must be joking.first of all the xbox 360 is microsofts second consol so how is this a newbie.number 2 we are only approaching the second year of ps3 going by it being released november in asia/america and march 07 here in europe so because its january we can say its approaching its second year of release and it has sold more in its first 2 years than wat the xbox 360 had sold in its first 2 years.3rd take the fact that xbox is now retailed at 200 euroes and ps3 is retailed at 400 euroes and even tough the xbox had a slight boost of sales it seems to be falling back to wat it used to be so how is xbox raping ps3.

to put it another way near 20 mil ps3s were sold in 2 years.on average thats 10 mil consols a year.xbox 360 has sold near 28 mil consols in 3 years which in average is 9 mil consols a year or if you want to estimate it like this.in 3 years of release ps3 will sell 30 mil consols while xbox only sold 28 mil so explain to us how ps3 is a disgrace.oh and you probably only know 4 or 5 asians so going by your percentage of asian owners accounts for f all of asian ps3 owners.in fact ps3 has sold 2/3 more consols to asians than xbox has

I personally believe the ps3 is resigned to the 3rd place (aweful pun intended) but I don't think it's enough to knock Sony so bad that they will abandon the 10yr plan and or give up on the ps4.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

Losing would be not selling the most consoles...

duh.

Not to say you can't have fun losing.

Lots of people do... but people who say otherwise remind me to much of the "Lets not keep score in kids sports" crowd.

Winning and Losing doesn't really matter so long as you have fun... however that doesn't mean you can change the definition of winning and losing.
