Forums - Sales Discussion - Yahoo to masses: Don't buy a PS3 til April

While this is true, I think we should watch sales data during march, because this may result in a 360/wii sales boost. I believe when the price drop doesn't drop in April, it will actually result in a push, where people who were actually planning to buy a ps3 might switch to 360/wii.

The reason being that this "news" causes people to become committed to buy the console. Once people have made a decision it is actually pretty hard to go back. When the bad news breaks, they will have already been prepping for 2-3 months to buy a console, and they will buy one. Whether their resolve will cause them to spend an extra hundred against their will for the ps3 or a different console depends on the customer, but regardless I think we will see increased console sales in March.

sony is behind all of this i know it!

I wouldn't lightheartedly rule out even the strangest hypothesis, but this is twisted: maybe have I inadvertently stumbled upon a christian-democrat forum?

Except, with the nature of the rumours I don't think this is a likely situation ... Regardless of whether it is a good thing or not, people (on the whole) dislike buying something that is unpopular. Even rebels in our society tend to conform to a fairly popular and well established style of rebellion.

If the PS3’s price cut rumours where phrased "The PS3 is so popular and has sold so well that economies of scale have reduced the manufacturing cost and an unprecedented rate and we expect the PS3 to see a price reduction in the near future" I could see the rumour having the impact you expect. Unfortunately, the price cut rumours are closer to "The PS3 is amazingly unpopular and Sony is in trouble. If they don’t reduce the price of the PS3 immediately they will have to stop manufacturing the system"

My second post was more serious than the first, but I agree with that a backlash effect will occur if some hold off purchasing a wii or 360, only to find that the ps3 drop doesn't occur. Good call.

And yes, why the pricecut might occur is critically important as well.

99% of the predictions Patcher makes end up wrong and a long way off the mark. The Same guy expected PS3 to dominate this console generation and have a market share of over 40%, he also said Wii would only get around 10% market share.

April PS3 price is highly unlikely. Price cut in slow sales months is a bad business move. The earliest price cut would be September after PS3 console revisions have been made and lower production costs for PS3 consoles. I expect a November 2009 price cut but more likely only $50, instead of $100 price cut. Sony is bleeding money at the moment in all its business due to the hard economic times. Selling less PS3s but at a higher price could help minimise Sony's expected losses in the next fiscal year. $50 price cut would make little impact whatsoever in terms of console sales but may stop PS3 sales from decreasing YOY over the Xmas sales period.

Having said all that above I recommend that gamers wait for PS3 to drop in price before buying it. You would regret paying $400 for PS3 is the next day it was announced PS3 price is dropped down to $300 as of today onwards.

I personally will wait at least two years for a new PS3 console to drop to $200, at that price a Blu-Ray and some PS3 exclusives may be worth considering.

It's a shame how many people are saying yahoo sucks just because they post an article that paints the ps3 in a bad light or something they interpret as that.
Their movie section is really cool when checking box office numbers.
