Best - Super Mario Bros. (3 is a very close second, the tie breaker, SMB was the first game that scrolled! you had to be there to understand the impact, it was just so amazing!)
note* because of how Defender and later Empire Strikes back operated I don't consider them the same thing, they didn't scroll objects apeared on the one screen, it was a well done trick/concept..

Worst - SMBL 2 6 Golden Coins , Marios jump was way to funky.

Best - Super Mario World, Sprite gaming at its finest.

Worst - I'll have to say Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island - Sadly the Sequel to Super Mario World was less than magical. Having to escort your annoying crying baby of a hero around a world looking like it was more or less drawn by a toddler is less than my vision of a "great" game.

I will say SMW is my fav.

i have played only 1 mario game so i have to say: Super Mario Bros 1. But i bet my opinnion would change if i ever get to play Mario Galaxy

Worst Main Game: Super Mario Sunshine (the gameplay was good but as a game i hated it because of the kiddy Barny-ish messages, all of the other ones in the main series were not as cheesy as this one)...
