Forums - Sony - PS3 in Holiday '08 'A Case Study on How to Hurt a Brand' – UBS

More comments as to a decrease in third party support. Would anyone else concur that we are seeing the beginning of a trend here? It is one thing for Microsoft to make such comments, but when independent financial analysts working for large firms say the same then its not quite as bogus as it once was.

I know a lot of posters will belittle this gentlemen as ignorant, but that doesn't actually matter. He has clout, and whether you agree with him or not his opinion matters when it comes to matters of finance. At the end of the day this guy will have the ear of the guy signing off on loans to small third party developers, and what do you think he is going to say about exclusive development for what he perceives as a hurting brand.

@the vagabond

my comment was for 3rd party games

also the analyst didn't even mention reasons for why this may be happening (reasons which I gave)....not once.....he has to be criticized for that

no wonder....360 is the cheapest console

wii ales = supply

PS3 = costliest console ever released which is still quit costly

now which one would the economy affect THATS RIGHT the wii60!!!

Wait wait, did you just say Wii is getting sales because of supply? How the fuck does that make sense or factor into your bad economy argument?

Do you expect all news articles to say. "SONY IS IN THE SHIT CHUTE - OH YEAH BUT THE ECONOMY IS BAD AND PS3 IS THE PRICEST". Bad economy is part of business, if you can't conform to a bad economy you can't be using the excuse that "we can't sell our product because the economy is bad." Tough luck, your competitors are doing fine.

@ymeaga1n

people LOVE the wii...

Wii's sales are related to supply....supply = sales for wii

its so popular its always sold out....economy doesn't matter here as the wii has been sold out since forever and still is

nintendo supply.....wii sells.....

what the hell is your problem learn to understand meanings in sentences not everyone has a conspiracy against the wii

& YES the analyst needs to assess the problem....he easily said "oh it should've sold better as R2 n LBP were out"....I am just saying as he mentioned that he should've mentioned....the economy may be a factor for this poor performance

Don't be a fanboy, he's not obligated to give excuses for the system, or explain why it's doing badly. Whatever I'll leave you to your critisism of the financial analyst for talking down about your system.

@The_vagabond

if he can make up BS like "our growing fears about the viability of third-party support for the platform."

he should be capable of not making up excuses but simply saying why things may be so bad

no-one is being a fanboy here

Most costly console ever released. The Neo Geo retailed for $650. Eighteen years ago. Factor in inflation, and you have substantially more expensive hardware. I am not saying that was the most expensive, but it most definitely defeats the PS3. Always be reticent about making wild generalizations, because that is how feet get lodged between teeth.

He is not in the position to make up bullshit. I would assume that could get him into trouble since people may base their investments off of his opinions. Why do you think you know more than this gentleman? Is it because you own a PS3 and he probably doesn't?

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.

people just love to ignore the bad economy...coupled with much lower 360 price point coupled with PS360 consoles for the same market

as for 3rd party viability

we have been through this discussion

3rd party games for the 360 won't be viable without the Ps3 also present

The economy may have hurt PS3 sales but, when you're evaluating a company, it was a pretty bad decision for Sony to release a console that required an unprecidented strong economy in order to be successful in a time when there were signs of trouble ahead in the economy. Certainly, no one expected the economy to be as bad as it is but most analysts and economists did expect the US (and most western countries) to face a recession between 2005 and 2010.

As for the third party support ... Most games receive a boost in sales on a particular platform when they're exclusive because they instantly become a higher profile game simply from being exclusive. When you combine this with support from the console manufacturer the benefit of being an exclusive game can be fairly dramatic. The question about third party support leaving the PS3 really surrounds whether Nintendo or Microsoft can make the benefits of producing exclusive games for their platform outweigh the benefits of producing a PS3 port.

If things start to get out of hand for Sony you could see more PS3 exclusive games become multiplatform, many multiplatform games become timed exclusives for other platforms, and many timed exclusives become true exclusives for other platforms.

@goddbless

well he's quite a bad person to go by in terms of getting advice.

he's telling me the problem & the wild/extremist results that it may have

but doesn't tell me the cause of it at all

@happy squirel

recent 3rd party game sales show there is no incentive of making them xbox 360 exclusive....I'm talking about fallout 3, Tomb raider, NFS, FIFA, PES, MAdden, COD and so on
