3rd party games for the 360 won't be viable without the Ps3 also present |
The economy may have hurt PS3 sales but, when you're evaluating a company, it was a pretty bad decision for Sony to release a console that required an unprecidented strong economy in order to be successful in a time when there were signs of trouble ahead in the economy. Certainly, no one expected the economy to be as bad as it is but most analysts and economists did expect the US (and most western countries) to face a recession between 2005 and 2010.
As for the third party support ... Most games receive a boost in sales on a particular platform when they're exclusive because they instantly become a higher profile game simply from being exclusive. When you combine this with support from the console manufacturer the benefit of being an exclusive game can be fairly dramatic. The question about third party support leaving the PS3 really surrounds whether Nintendo or Microsoft can make the benefits of producing exclusive games for their platform outweigh the benefits of producing a PS3 port.
If things start to get out of hand for Sony you could see more PS3 exclusive games become multiplatform, many multiplatform games become timed exclusives for other platforms, and many timed exclusives become true exclusives for other platforms.
