Forums - Gaming - Doom 4: prefer old school or new school?

So we see they're putting some extra focus on story telling, a la:

I really didn't like doom 3 that much, sure it was jumpy and great graphics, but that just wasn't the kinda DOOM we all really know. I miss the swarms of enemies, and the sounds from the original just had more of an effect.

so which u prefer, tight hallway deadspace-esque jump from behind u doom 3, or good old run and gun sprawling expanse stages with droves of enemies coming at you.....with GREAT music and sound effect.

I certainly prefer the old style. Maybe if they can do a new slant while keeping the core oldschool gameplay, i'd say BRING IT ON.

Doom hasn't been good since... Actually, come to think of it, Doom was never any good! Maybe I was too busy playing the Ultima series to enjoy them!

^^well, different genre altogether but doom really kickstarted the shooter genre!@!@

you suck, btw

My favorite mod for Doom 3 was the classic Doom Mod if that gives you an idea of which way I'd like to see them go with Doom 4.

I play Doom 1/2/Plutonia/TNT with the JDOOM engine far more often now then Doom 3. The original Dooms were classic, Doom 3 was just another run of the mill FPS.

Frankly, an old-school Doom 3 would basically be Painkiller, and I already own that.

But I would like to own it with iD's technology behind it, so I would like Doom 4 to be more classic. If they want more storytelling, fine, but the gameplay should be the same repetitive adrenaline-fest where the only thing in higher supply than enemies is bullets.

I'm not being ironic. I want that so bad I can taste it.

Definitely old-school. When I first started up the original Doom, I had an overwhelming feeling of awe that I have yet to feel again 15 years later.

When I was little (12) I loved playing doom. That was a real gaming experience beyond anything else, because a shooter like that had never been done before. Doom was all about fun -- not just being frightened (which worked -- I was young) but also mowing down tons of bad guys, solving simple puzzles (I can see an awesome power up, but I don't know how to get to it), gathering new weapons and keys, etc.

Doom 3 I didn't like as much. It was too reality based. But Doom? Doom was awesome.

I just can't bring myself to play through Doom 3. I'm not a big fan of the horror genre already, but the way Doom 3 tries to scare got annoying pretty quick.

Tons of monsters and such behind every corner and a lot of flickering lights or pitch black rooms and you get that stupid flashlight? Even with a flashlight mod I was getting tired of the design of the game.

yea i played doom3 once and never again. i was more fascinated in upgrading my rig for the graphics.

I also use the jdoom launcher/engine and have a blast. i always remember the feeling i got used back in the day when i used to play it.

you and i, we are on the same page.

I like them all, though the originals had a better atmosphere and overall feeling. I really liked Doom 3, too, though. Still, Wolfenstein > Doom for me.

Oh, and a good story is always good. Now we'll just have to see whether it's good or bad.

I wouldn't expect a very fast-paced game now as Doom 4 is said to run at 30Hz while Rage runs at 60Hz.
