Forums - Nintendo - IGN: "Wii Music a Hit: We Have Failed"

A review is by definition an opinion but it should be  knowledge based opinion and most definitely not be a personal preference based opinion.

If I didn’t like the book just because I don’t like that genre, then that should not affect my score. The fact that I may personally hate science fiction, or westerns or whatever does not make them poor quality or any less appealing to those who do like that type of book. As long as I describe the book accurately, they will know if it is a genre that appeals to them, whether it does to me is totally irrelevant.

Agreed.  And when IGN started, they did this.  And did it well.  But halfway through last generation, they suddenly changed their stance.  Seemingly to blame Nintendo for the GameCube failing and the lack of Third Party support.  And to seek more popularity with their readership, as IGN was a site known for having a heavy Nintendo BAIS.  So, I guess in their mind, their way to counteract this was to start going the other way and start building a heavy XBOX and Sony bias and lowering their Nintendo scores.

But whatg they're doing now has gone beyond a few petty remarks or a few shaved points.  As this and almost daily articles on their site can show.

I guess I might as well link to the review I did of Wii Music way back when it came out.

Not all of us stuck to Matt Cassamassina's "self-indulgence over usefulness to audience" policy of reviewing with Wii Music, thank goodness.

This thread is just a gift that keeps on giving. I almost want to bookmark it TWICE.

My advice to fanboys: Brag about stuff that's true, not about stuff that's false. Predict stuff that's likely, not stuff that's unlikely. You will be happier, and we will be happier.

I have the most epic death scene ever in VGChartz Mafia.  Thanks WordsofWisdom!

Nintendo has a video of Miyamoto visiting a kindergarten class and showing them Wii Music.

Miyamoto visits a kindergarten class.

The kids in the class seem to enjoy it. The game definitely doesn't fit the usual mold though.

But your review doesn't consider the viewpoint of the hardcore, so meh to you. Meh, I say!

Heh. I wrote that review to pander to no specific bias. Which is why it reads closer to a report on scientific findings with hypotheses on why things happened the way they did than it does a self-indulgent rant on why the game rocks or sucks. Much like how scientific reports are more useful to more people (in the long run, anyway) than sensationalist news stories are, so too did I intend the review to be more useful to as many people as possible than to a specific group of people.

Sky Render - Sanity is for the weak.

The hardest of the core, the hardest Wii music is. If Wii music is a casual game (I think Guitar hero games are) then it is just too hard to play for some hardcore gamers. They just haven't realized they are dinosaurs doom to extinction. Old dogs can't learn new tricks.

for it sharing the exact same idea as Wii Music

The exact same idea is a phrase that must have a different meaning for you than for me.

The thing is Singstar is a Karaoke game and it is a good karaoke game with an input device (a microphone) that is perfect for Karaoke.

Wii Music is a game for making music and it does this with an input device that is shitty for making music. A wand you wave around. The Wiimote doesn't look like a music instrument, it doesn't have the controls of a music instrument. Because of this games like Rockband add very expensive accessories like the drums that really work like music instruments.

The Wiimote is great for Wii Sports because many sports are rather nicely approximated by waving around a racket, a bat or whatever. Making music is much more complicated with very different instruments and many times blowing out air of your mouth is a completely different matter and this shows. It looks ridiculous and 95% of reviews have said that it plays sucky too. Now it apparently has sales success but perhaps people are so disgusted with it that they will learn for the next time. One can only hope.

A bit of cherry picking on my part but from personal experience GameStops don't have mass amounts of traded in Wii Music games which usually is what happens when people are displeased with a new game, but they have huge stacks of games like GTA IV, The Force Unleashed, Halo 3 (even though that's a little less relivent since it's older but still has huge stacks right after release) and even MGS4...

I wonder. Could it be because most of wii music buyers don't shop from stores like gamestop? They don't know that they can sell their used copies.

The spin.  It hurts my head.

No no, it's true! If those stupid casuals only knew about Gamestop, they'd be ditching Wii Music in droves. As it is, all they have is eBay.

Just don't ask me whether eBay folks are looking to ditch Little Big Planet or, heaven forbid, Gears of War 2 more than they are Wii Music, since some folks might not like the answer...

Interesting idea:

Skipping Brand New from ebay results:

Wii Music  -- 118

Call of Duty: World at War Wii -- 110

Little Big Planet -- 141

Gears of War 2: 518

Metal Gear Solid 4: 235

Halo 3: 438

GTA IV: 414 for 360 and 319 for PS3

Super Mario Galaxy: 205

Doesn't seem too many people are ditching it on ebay yet.   That said, I didn't do anything to adjust for sales of the games, and wii music hasn't caught up with most of those.
