Forums - Nintendo - I don't think Motion Plus is going to be all that and all the Cheese.

In my opinion, Wii Motion Plus is getting a lot of hype right now, but I don't think it is really going to have that large of an effect on increasing Wii sales and probably not that large of an effect on Wii titles that we are going to see in  the future.  I base this on watching this industry for a number of years and in that time I have seen several Nintendo projects that were supposed to be their next big thing come and go.  These have included items like the Game Boy Player and the E-card reader, Rob the Robot, the gun controller never living up to its full potential except in Duck Hunt, the Power Glove and the mat that you used in certain NES games (I forget whta it was called), so unless Wii Sports Resort and Motion Plus become bundled with the Wii at some point I just don't see it having much of an effect on Wii games.  It just slightly improves what you can already do on the Wii in my opinion, and I don't think that is a strong selling point.  What do you think?

They just need to say "Star Wars with support for Motion + will be made" and the device will probably start selling faster than anything.

Play Red Steel and give us another opinion on what it would feel like with Wii MotionPlus. Tiger Woods PGA Tour will be even better, The Conduit will rock with it, wrestling games will be better, and hopefully a Fight Night Round 4 will get on the Wii and use it. Star Wars: Lightsaber Duels would've done better with Wii MotionPlus too. There's a lot of potential with the new accessory.

Let's face it, absolutely EVERYONE who heard Nintendo's idea for the first time all those years ago they thought, STAR WARS, then LIGHTSABERS! I mean everyone. ow imagine what will happen if they FINALLY make it possible.

Yeah, Nintendo did have a couple of peripherals that didn't do so well, like the ones you mentioned

But they also introduced simplified controllers, the shoulder buttons, re-inroduced analog sticks for the new 3D gaming, rumble packs, now motion controls....so in reality the potential is there for Motion + to succeed, but only if there is enough support from the software to warrant it.

all the cheese?

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

I think there is a world of difference between doing sword fighting 1:1 and what we have now which is merely recognition of which direction the Wiimote is moving in - which basically is little better than a directional pad but more visceral.

So any game with sword fighting (Red Steel 2, Star Wars Whatever Lightsaber game) will be a far superior seller with WM+.

Tiger Woods could potentially become a MUST HAVE for every golfer out there if the WM+ is sensitive enough (possibly combined with balance board) to not only realistically recreate your swing exactly but tell you what you're doing wrong with it. Golfers would have no problem shelling out $500 for Wii, WiiFit, TW'10 if it'll help improve their swing.

Also huge difference for baseball, tennis games too (and Cricket if someone is smart enough to make it)

Wii Fit 2 could use WM+ to great advantage as it'll be able to identify how your doing exercises without the balance board. And we know how well Wii Fit sells.

In many games the difference will be insignificant because the developer won't want to limit themselve to only people with WM+ so the game has to be playable without it. But it does open up all new possibilities of gameplay that developers can explore if they do go WM+ only.

Ultimately it may amount to nothing if all we get is crap mini-games with poor utilization. But there's a ton of money lying on the table for some smart developer to make AAA games that utilizes it to give people fun vertual experiences without living the comfort of their homes (and having to spend $$$ on the real thing).

There is the opinion out there that we were lied to, deceived about the Wii's motion-sensing capabilities when we were just substituting waggle for a button press

To the holders of that opinion, motion plus is going to finally fulfill the promise of the Revolution.

Motion Plus will do better than the other Wii peripherals, simply because it's applicable for so many things. However, market penetration will obviously determine it's viability. If the peripheral doesn't sell for some reason, it will fail, and become a self-perpetuating failure (no sales so no applications so no sales)
