Forums - Nintendo - Will 2009 Be the Year the Wii Sells... "Normal"

Normal is in like the PS2 did. See here

http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=Wii&reg1=All&cons2=PS2&reg2=All&cons3=PS2&reg3=All&weeks=200

Right now the Wii is tracking well above the PS2 (the PS2 is thrown off alittle because it launch in Spring in Japan, thus the fact that it does not line up well with the Wii.

I mean, I think we Nintendo fans have been a bit spoiled as of late, would it be the worst thing if the Wii started selling like the PS2 did in its prime? I mean the PS2 is the best selling console to date. Nintendo is getting close to passing their last 2 consoles combined here in the next few months, maybe we should chill. You know, the Wii will not sell like this forever, and you know the HD consoles will say the Wii is a fad if it on sell 45% of the 2 hd consoles combined for an extended period.

I am just saying, the 360 has peaked or is peaking, but the PS3 has it best life ahead of it (not really saying too much).

I really dont see the Wii maintaining its ungodly sales like the DS has, because the Wii actually has real competition. The PSP has not been competition for the DS since their 1st year when people were predicting the PSP would bankrupt nintendo (nintendo was surviving a bit off their Handhelds).

So here is my prediction, the Wii beats last year Yoy(because production is higher) until May (when WiiFit launched) then it trends under it for a while, and Wii become accessible during the summer at most outlets (in stock), then Next holidays actually see slighly better sales because there is more stock left over from the regular months.

09 Will be the best year of the Wii (due to much better Q1 and 2), but I think it will be in stock for pretty much March-Nov.

I actually see things in Japan slowing down a bit in the next few months, maybe hanging around 25k a week or so, then REALLY picking up when MHg, tri, and more info is released about DQX. Overall 2009 "should" be a bit better in Japan than 08 was.

Things that could really through this off, well, a price drop would do wonder to get more casuals and younger gamers on board. A 149.99 price tag would send the Wii through the roof again. I guess colors too, I never cared for them, but I guess some people do.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

I think Nintendo's going to try to keep sales high for a long time. In japan they may come out with color Wii's and/or bundles with Wii Fit and Wii Sports Resort. But they're most likely going to try releasing more hits like Wii Fit and Wii Sports to keep console sales going.

But they will never do a price drop. Never. Ever... Ok, maybe right before they come out with a new console but that's a very long time from now.

I think they will drop the price, but they are going to wait for when they need it, might now be until mid 2010, or early 2011....

they won't do a price drop unless demand falls far below thier current production, and the decide to sell what they have instead of lowering pruduction (takes time, and wastes money)

lowering price is always better than cutting production... Remember the Cube? Went fricken 99 dollars before they finally had to lower production.  Basically in the VG business most of your money is made off games, it is better to sell many at no profit or a small loss, than to sell less at a profit. (or in Sony case sell few at a major loss...)

It wouldnt surprise me if it sells more than 2008.

I'd much rather nintendo dispatched a team to each dev so they implement those damn motion controls properly in their games..i recently played samba de amigo and it made me miss my dc so much.. dont give us a price cut.. give us games that use that damn motion control feature like it was intended.. thank you

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.

5 THINGS I'd like to see before i knock out:

a. a AAA 3D sonic title

b. a nintendo developed game that has a "M rating"

c. redesgined PS controller

d. SEGA back in the console business

e. M$ out of the OS business

hopefully WiiMotion+ will add to that.

also, this was nothing about a price cut, I just threw a disclaimer in there. It was about being ready for when... the Wii is in stock... many people for some reason believe that if the Wii is ever in stock it will then cease to sell.

It is even better to sell many at a profit. (I think nintendo is going to go with that one.)

^right, that is why I do not expect a pricecut within the next 18 months.
