i believe that either miscrosoft or sony are gonna exit the console market next gen

I'm pretty sure Microsoft won't... They are making profit right now, and are building a brand. They will at least try something.

I would be pretty astonished if Sony did either.  I mean, it would seem like an awfully knee jerk reaction to a problem.  The Playstation brand has a built in fanbase and still holds weight, even though some would say otherwise.  Yes, Sony has significant financial difficulties, but isn't Playstation one of the closest things they have to a ubiqitous brand?

Yes it would be shocking, if it happens it's most likely not because they don't want to, but because they can't.

Regarding the original question, I tend to agree with HappySqurriel here. In many ways I believe Sony and MS would copy Nintendo's approach.

See we are forgetting that Sony survived solely on the revenue from gaming for a long time, the last few years or so.

Corporate Sony, and as i said before its potential new owners if things get worse, will not sell their console dev. off except maybe some internal game developers.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Survived solely? I believe televisions, cameras and music must have been more important, even though, PS2 dominated.  Isn't gaming a fraction of the company, that surely wasn't the anchor, right?

i dk i was just looking online but i have heard, and its quite logical to figure this considering korea's increase in technology production, Sony has had trouble competing and the PS2 was the market killer in consoles.

Ok Finally i got something. La Times reports -

That success has made the PlayStation franchise crucial to the bottom line of Sony. In one year, PlayStation accounted for 68% of corporate profit. It also helps smooth out the financial ups and downs of Sony’s unpredictable, hit-driven entertainment and electronics divisions.

68% is friggin massive, the article basically says PS3 is the major gamble - from 2006

Isn't that a little misleading?  I'm sure the profit made by PS2 was less than the amount of money that was necessary to break even.  The t.v., camera, music money probably got them even, and then the PS2 put them over the top.  I can't be certain, you could definitely be right, the PS2 DID have some massive years, to be sure.

I think Microsoft will go the digital route with thier new console, no CD drive, only downloadable content. But for this they will need to had at least a 2 tera (2000gb) soild state hard drive and I belive thier will go for the core gamers again.
