I'm pretty sure Microsoft won't... They are making profit right now, and are building a brand. They will at least try something.

I would be pretty astonished if Sony did either. I mean, it would seem like an awfully knee jerk reaction to a problem. The Playstation brand has a built in fanbase and still holds weight, even though some would say otherwise. Yes, Sony has significant financial difficulties, but isn't Playstation one of the closest things they have to a ubiqitous brand?

See we are forgetting that Sony survived solely on the revenue from gaming for a long time, the last few years or so.
Corporate Sony, and as i said before its potential new owners if things get worse, will not sell their console dev. off except maybe some internal game developers.

Survived solely? I believe televisions, cameras and music must have been more important, even though, PS2 dominated. Isn't gaming a fraction of the company, that surely wasn't the anchor, right?
