Dragon Quest X indicates that the wind is changing, and that's probably better for the company.

Not really.  Yuji Horii takes his baby (Dragon Quest) in a totally different direction of the companies goals all the time.  If the Playstation would have bombed in the late 90s, he would have put Dragon Quest VII on the GBA as DQIX is going on the DS.  Since he's stated he always puts his games on the most popular platform.

But as for what the topic asked.  I do think Square-Enix is taking their company in the wrong direction.  Even if Microsoft is paying the to make RPGs for their system or if they're making RPGs for the other guys for whatever reason (better graphics, familiarity with Sony and Microsoft, just hate Nintendo), in the long run, it's going to hurt them in the one area they need most.  The Final Fantasty brand is saturated more than Madden, Mario and Sonic all jumping a shark at once.  No fan of the series can keep up with it, even the most devoted with the biggest pocket book in the world.  And as such, its enevitable that this suckers bubble is going to burst.  And what's Square doing about it?  Pumping out MORE Sequels, remakes and rehashes of the same Final Fantasy related material from 5-10 years ago.

The only original material coming from Square is Enix, and yet its being considered 'seconary' to anything coming out of the Square side.  And on the DS, anything that's not Final Fantasy is almost being purposefully altered to sell poorly.  Lackluster advertising, altered translations and pathetic localizations.  Even the creator of 'The World Ends With You' made light of this.  Why don't they just paint a sign on their company that says 'Square-Enix and Final Fantasy outside Japan'.  But in a few years, even their Final Fantasy brand will be faultering since they're not paying attention to it.

You make a fair point.... but I'm willing to hope.

I hope my girlfriend finishes Chrono Trigger DS soon, I could go for a playthrough myself.

None of the S-E 360 JRPGs have been high quality thus far so I don't know if they're just milking the system Wada-style. The problem with this approach is that gamers can no longer assume a game with S-E on the box a guaranteed excellent title like the ps1 days but the current S-E boss doesn't care. It's all about the benjamins as far as he's concerned.

It looks like FF may be the only S-E franchise to retain it's quality.

"Dr. Tenma, according to you, lives are equal. That's why I live today. But you must have realised it by now...the only thing people are equal in is death"---Johann Liebert (MONSTER)

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

No, Square got caught with their pants down this gen. They've been making expensive games for the PS2 for years but have been able to turn a profit due to the ease with which they could sell a couple million copies over the huge userbase. Since most of their development is done on PCs taking MS's big wad of cash for exclusives makes far more sense than the extra effort it would take to port the games to the PS3.

Why they didn't start more cheap Wii projects after the Wii started selling like crazy is beyond me.

The people making the games were in denial to the shift of their own fanbase and the overall market.  And they chose to keep making the games based on their own specifications (high end graphics, remakes and sequels over new games) rather than come to terms with the new trends in the market.

One such high level producer in Square even left a couple years ago citing that these practices would lead to disaster for Square in the long run.  Stating that all the current teams wanted to do was remake the same old games over again in a more beautiful look.  Considering that after the team that made 'The World Ends Wth You' was told that they could never make another game like that again, I'm not surprised he left.

This is also why I think the only original games we're going to see coming from Square-Enix in the next 5-10 years are going to be from the Enix side.  And that's sad, considering that a joint venture with Square and Enix could EASILY produce a new amazing franchise (or the biggest wet dream in Japanese history, a Dragon Quest/Final Fantasy RPG Crossover).  But they're too busy remaking FFIV and VII for the upteenth time.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

its the fault for ignoring the ps3, now WKC is the highest selling HD JRPG in japan.
and will likely outsell rogue galaxy.
and will be until FF 13 is released.

Releasing JRPGS timed/exclusively on a system that has sold less than 1M in Japan.... I fail to compute.

I stumble over this today http://the-magicbox.com/gaming.htm

That website states japans most wanted games and Square Enix top 10 best selling games over a span of a year.

And i have to say and some might agree that the sales are horrible...seeing how japanese love there jrpgs more than anything else..

was this a wise move? or are they looking at money from microsoft?

someone help me understand there motivate cause its not very clear.

note*

they also stated

"Square Enix chosen Xbox 360 as the platform for its new RPGs (Star Ocean The Last Hope, The Last Remnant, Infinite Undiscovery" as one of japans biggest news

Two reasons why this is wrong.

They have, since the start of the generation, had the DS as their go to system for RPGs

They have already put out a statement saying it was a dumb thing to do, and that they are switching development to the DS and Wii. We had a thread about it already, but I can't remember where

I am not sure how this is Square or MS fault. If they didn't release it for 360 then there would not have release it on PS3.

Infinite Undiscovery was MS funded IP and publish by SE. The Last Remnant was for both system except they could not get PS3 version to properly using Unreal Engine 3 even 360 one ran like turd, can you imagine how bad the PS3 would be?

The next game is Star Ocean 4, which is the first exclusive JRPG on the 360 from Square.

So get the fact and lay off the FUD already.

The interesting stuff is that Tri-Ace is using the Infinite Undiscovery engine in Star Ocean 4, an engine that was funded with MS's money, they played their cards well with Tri-Ace and Square Enix here...

About the Last Remnant, i still say this: Multiplatform titles sell better if they're released simultaneously, they could have waited until the 3 versions (or the 2 console ones) were polished enough to release them and sell more because of the target audience and quality, instead, they released it on one platform, too early and unpolished, i have to think it was MS hand behind this...

They money square looses on sales of their games they make it up from M$.
They are siding with the company with more billions how can they be making a mistake?

Square is making a good choice though. They are looking to maximize profit and na and europe has a good 350 install base. Exclusive atm on a ps3 is not a good idea to maximize profit atm for a high budget game like ff13.
