They've been making expensive games for the PS2 for years but have been able to turn a profit due to the ease with which they could sell a couple million copies over the huge userbase.

Why they didn't start more cheap Wii projects after the Wii started selling like crazy is beyond me.

The people making the games were in denial to the shift of their own fanbase and the overall market.  And they chose to keep making the games based on their own specifications (high end graphics, remakes and sequels over new games) rather than come to terms with the new trends in the market.

One such high level producer in Square even left a couple years ago citing that these practices would lead to disaster for Square in the long run.  Stating that all the current teams wanted to do was remake the same old games over again in a more beautiful look.  Considering that after the team that made 'The World Ends Wth You' was told that they could never make another game like that again, I'm not surprised he left.

This is also why I think the only original games we're going to see coming from Square-Enix in the next 5-10 years are going to be from the Enix side.  And that's sad, considering that a joint venture with Square and Enix could EASILY produce a new amazing franchise (or the biggest wet dream in Japanese history, a Dragon Quest/Final Fantasy RPG Crossover).  But they're too busy remaking FFIV and VII for the upteenth time.
