I think MikeB is an alternate account for Crazzyman.

He didn't use to be this  way... He has always been too much in love with the Cell to the point of making some ridiculous technical claims (as well as some valid ones), but never until a few weeks ago had I seen him making insane sales predictions.

You are wrong, I have. Just before the Halo 3 release I stated the PS3 would soon regain ground after that title was launched. Some staff members made fun of me and I have seen my share of ridiculing from 360 fans back then as well.

In the end I was right about this though.

haha yeah you predicted the Ps3 would outsell the xbox360 WW in 2008, wow yeah you were right lol

The price drop will spike sales, but it won't help Sony that much.

Sorry.

If the console sold according to expectations, why did Sony lower the price from 600 € to 400 € before the PS3 even saw its first holiday in Europe?

The 40 GB PS3 provided fewer features than the original model. It does not make much sense to charge the same amount of money. (no card readers, smaller harddrive, no PS2 compatibility [no PS2 GPU included], etc).

And the PS3 sold slower than anticipated for Japan and North America, which also got these new models. The PS3 performed well in Europe already.

But certainly you don't think that Sony was planning that all along (along with the huge price cut 6 months after launch)?

Of course the PS2 CPU and GPU had to go eventually. It's all about simplifying the motherboard design (cheaper, less power hungry, less cooling required, etc), resulting into cost reductions and being able to pave the way towards a slimline model eventually.

Sadly designing a software emulator takes much time and effort, else they would have never included those chips on the motherboard.

PS3 vs 360 sales

so its true......every year is the year of the ps3.

it may sting to hear this, but the 360 is in second place and will stay there.

Besides.....u forgot to leave out the possibility of another 360 price cut due to the valhalla chipset.

This is a great example of your trademark trick of evading the core of the question. I rest my case.

A far more ideal pricing for a console (with a system selling game) is 299 dollars at retail or below. It's a sweetspot, of course Sony would try to get there as soon as possible and they are still working on this.

If you're going to use alt accounts to evade your permban, you might want to look into using a different name.

It's like 2008 all over again!

How much do you expect the PS3 to outsell the 360 in 2008?

EA expects the PS3 to outsell the 360 this year by about 3.5 million for Europe, personally I would go closer to 4 million due to high profile exclusives.

For Noth America EA expects both platforms to perform about on par, this puzzles me somewhat considering most XBox users already upgraded and considering the high profile PS3 exclusives. Personally I expect the difference to be at the very least 1 million, I would normally state more but maybe EA knows something I don't, it's an American company afterall.

With regard to Japan I believe this will be the PS3's breakthrough year for Japan, especially if FF XIII does get released. Considering the 360 is pretty much a non factor there, I would say about 1.5 million difference.

For the rest of the world I would add another 500k worth of difference.

Total: At least ~7 million, so IMO the PS3 could well end up becoming on par or even end up outselling the 360's total install base this year. (Assuming no economic slowdowns or major shockers)

You know, this cycle of consoles has been going for 2+ years now, and they've all got a great selection of games available already, is anybody SERIOUSLY believing that there's millions upon millions of hardcore gamers out there that are still biding their time to buy their next-gen console, waiting until "X" game comes out for it?

Shure, significant price drops will spur on sales but they will be met by price drops from the other consoles - I really can't imagine sales trends changing that much - I say sales "positions" will most likely remain where they've been for the past year.

A year ago I thought late 2009 was a good call. However, since the 360 dropped price, PS3 sold less this holiday than last, Sony's publically known financial issues and rumors off massive cutbacks, I think the PS3 may never make 2nd place.

IF there is a price reduction it will be after this fiscal year ends (after April 1) and it will definitely not be to a price point that would make the hardware lose money anymore. So, at best your looking at a $50 reduction.

@$350 the PS3 is not going to fly off shelves (nor $300 as you claim). To do that it would require sub-$200 pricing that is not going to happen this year and maybe not even next.

Those of you who believe this are as delusional as those who think the PS3 will live 10+ years and the Earth will end in Dec of 2012.
