Forums - Sales - PS3 will overtake XBox 360 by December 2009 in worldwide console sales.

You and Mike B are some very powerful examples of why no one should start doing drugs.

Crazzyman made this kind of thing funny , you guys just make it look stupid.

Leave it to the professional.

N64 is the ONLY console of the fifth generation!!!

Just when I thought I had seen everything from MikeB.

Maybe he is taking up Crazzyman's slack? I don't know how else to explain it.

With all the negativity, I thought I might just as well share some more balanced perspectives. As I said, I consider it a possibility for the given reasons.

Important will be a cheaper slimline PS3, so that Sony can finally start to push the platform they way it deserves. For instance selling at Wii levels early on Sony could never have afforded, so until they are near the break even point on the hardware it will be a balancing act for Sony.

So the PS3 doubling its userbase (built in 2+ years) during a recession year is a balanced perspective?

By the way, your "Sony couldn't have afforded" argument doesn't work. They could have afforded it if the PS3 sold OK at 500-600 € as Sony was expecting.

What do you mean? The console sold OK, it outsold the much overhyped 360 sales taking equal time frames.

And no, Sony couldn't have afforded selling at Wii like levels early on (at least not at 500 or 600 dollars, maybe at 800 to 900 dollars they could have). That would have costed billions extra without enough software sales revenue to balance the hardware investment costs.

I think PS3 will outsell X360 by 5mil consoles in 2009 while x360 will be ahead of PSP by 400k. At the same time wii will outsell PS3 by 7mil consoles and x360 by 2mil. X360 by the end of 2009 will come close to DS at around 120mil, and PSP will outsell DS by 600k in overall sales. The PS2 overall will be better than PS3 and PS3 will be better than PS2.

I think that makes sense

You think wrong.

If all the right ingredients are there then I consider this a possibility. I agree a significant price cut is needed, Gran Turismo 5 will be needed for Europe, Killzone 2 will need to be a sustained hardware pusher for North America, Final Fantasy XIII needs to be released in time for Japan.

360 sales will have to slow down as well but with its most antcipated games already out and all popular XBox games having already seen sequels I think this is likely to happen in the course of 2009.

Hopefully Blu-Ray continues to outperform DVD and consumers will get more educated on differences in console specifications in general. Playstation Home may become a selling feature.

But IMO it wouldn't be a shame if outselling the 360 install base happens in 2010 considering the 360's huge headstarts (and entry pricing as low as 119 Euro, including 19% tax and free games).

What? outperform DVD? Based on what definition of outperform?

As for the "right ingredients," I'm assuming 1 major ingredient is terrorists focussing all their hate of the West on Microsoft, blowing up all 360 production facilities and most of the 1st party/exclusive developers. Otherwise, MS won't let it happen. Even in this time of recession MS is making money hand over fist, so if the PS3 came raging up the charts, they'd drop their price and introduce bundles to counter. Not that PS3 will have any such momentum, because anyone reading the financial data on Sony realizes that they are in DIRE straits.

I understand how people can get frustrated with Sony hate flying around lately... But if you consider the state of their finances, the sales of PS3 so far, and the simple fact that so many insane predictions haven't come true... These threads do deserve the hate, for the sheer ignorance and lunacy they propose. If LittleBigPlanet and MGS4 and everything else didn't propel the PS3 into 2nd place-despite being fantastic games-what makes this year different?

Sony have shown so much of what they have to offer for this year already, and if they are undergoing major restructuring across all or most of their divisions, they may struggle to pull out another big first party title. But Microsoft and Nintendo haven't played their cards yet for this year, so don't assume either console will no longer be an as interesting proposition for potential consumers.

to end this thread real fast without use of any arguments what so ever ;

No, ain't gonna happen.

I wonder why I even opened this thread. Thank you for ending it quickly for me.

I also wonder where all thesre mythical purchases are going to come from.  Everyone already has an 360 or a Wii. There simply aren't 15M people lying around waiting to buy a PS3!

Trying to convince me the Wii is a real adult game machine 'if you play it right' is like trying to convince me Tofu tastes great 'if you just cook it right'

What? outperform DVD? Based on what definition of outperform?

Continues to outperform DVD taking equal time frames. Blu-Ray in 2008 outperformed DVD compared to 1999 sales (both software and hardware), so I mean Blu-Ray to continue to outperform DVD in 2009 compared to how well DVD performed in 2000.
