Forums - Sales - PS3 will overtake XBox 360 by December 2009 in worldwide console sales.

@ FishyJoe

The PS3 did considerably outsell the 360 in Europe last year. The 360 is still a non factor for Japan.

Regarding 2008 holiday sales, I anticipated no economic problems like yen vs dollar exchanges, so I expected a worldwide PS3 price cut by October. I anticipated Final Fantasy to be ready in 2008. I also didn't expect the 360 to sell as low as 119 Euros including 19% taxes including free games, etc.

I have said this multiple times already. Yes not everything has gone according to plan, but for the long run I don't think it will matter that much.

I have listed the factors I consider to be crucial many times.

Considering the fact that we've been hearing the same excuses things ever since the PS3 launched, what is the long run? Ten years from now? And why don't the last two or three years matter that much?

I have said in the past, the PS3 is technically well ahead of its time. According to Sony we are sill in the early adopters phase as well.

The PlayStation 3 is "still in its early adopter phase", John Koller, director of hardware marketing at SCEA, said that the kind of person who was interested in the PS3 was "tech-oriented" and that for them, the console's main appeal was its "multi-functionality".

He said: "2009 will be the year of big, exclusive PS3 titles."

But it sounds like the early adopter phase is nearly over, like I said before I anticipate a cheaper slimmer PS3 for this year. Fingers crossed.

You never did explain to me the support behind your theory of a cheaper slimmer PS3.  I'd be interested in that.  But where is any information on such a thing?  Or support to believe it will happen?

Sony has already developed cheaper slimmer Blu-Ray drives, at CES 2009 a new smaller PS3 motherboard was on display, probably requiring far less cooling and thus a smaller casing.

PS3 vs 360 sales

19.5 mil in a year is Wii sales levels, it needs to get to 360 levels before it can even think about Wii levels
The whole concept is just ludicrous

Even the fact that they'd be selling the console at an additional $100 loss, by selling a rounded 20 million would mean that Sony lose an additional US$2 billion next year, like that can afford to happen

Never argue with idiots
They bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience

It was rumored a little while back, maybe 1-2 months ago.  Also, theres a thread made just yesterday I believe about the size of the mobo and how much smaller it is now which came from the most recent CES show held only a few days ago.  I'm of the belief that the PS3 will be slimmed down twice - once possibly next year, then again 2-3 years later - based solely on it's size.  There's also information in the same thread about the mobo that states that Sony has come up with a way to compress the size of the blu-ray drive.  Once the GPU is the same size as the CPU, 45nm I believe, I firmly believe we'll see a slim(er) model.
