Forums - Nintendo - Why can't 3rd parties compete against Nintendo?

I think that, what Nintendo does, they do extraordinarily well.

Nintendo's games won't appeal to every last man, woman or child, but to those seeking the kinds of experiences Nintendo has to offer, they'll find them bigger and better in Nintendo games than anywhere else.

And, I'd suspect that people who are drawn to Nintendo consoles generally are those predisposed to be attracted to the kind of gameplay Nintendo excels at designing.

Publishers in general need -- absolutely need -- to put things in to terms of demographic target audiences.

Things like Wii Sports or Mario Kart absolutely throw them for loops: that is, games that appeal to young and old, male and female. It's like the concept simply doesn't compute. They don't know where to start when they don't have a target demographic.

I think the Bodherator said it best.

That's cheating. That's the post that made me think of putting up this post.

I'm pretty sure the original post you put up is me too, right? As in, that's an uncited quote of me, more or less. So the best response to the post you've made is another post I've made.

So basically I double-super-ultra win this thread.

cause nintendo doesn't care about schedule and has no problem on delaying a game just to make it better, oh and miyamoto is the other reason

2 reasons
1. The gaming media says that 3rd party games don't sell on Nintendo consoles.
2. 3rd party publishers believe it and make terrible games.

I agree, there is a system and the order goes like this. "Wii is casual, it has no core games" "Wii is a good 2nd system" "PS360 title is  AMAZING BUY IT" "This Wii game has bad graphics, YOU WANT better graphics" Pachter "im an economist and i know lots of things, Wii cant sell 3rd party so dont develop for Wii" "Core press tells us Wii has got nothing so we make casual games" Return to start and the cycle continues and continues

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

They can. They just don't.

No question Nintendo has some advantages - their mascots are the icons of gaming, and very few IPs have that sort of fan base - of 1st party titles, only Halo/MasterChief can compete with Mario/Zelda (though Sony is trying).

They avoid competing with themselves (Nintendo one platformer, one racer, one adventure title, etc).

Nintendo understood the Wii before anyone else (by necessity) and so were in the best position to exploit it.

But what I think helps Nintendo more than anything else is that they are a game company, and have no pretensions of being anything else. The Wii was never a "gateway playform" like the 360 and PS3 are supposed to be. Their focus from the start has been on gamers, and they've spent a good part of the last decade trying to figure out how to make more gamers, rather than trying to get gamers to use their console to watch movies.

Finally, Nintendo is as all awesome as we like to think. ETernal Darkness sank like a rock. Metroid Prime 1-3 did very modest numbers. Pikmin has never been more than a niche title. Its really just a few of the aforementioned mascots that really drive the sales through the roof, and many companies have their own "killer" IPs that can stand toe to toe with Mariio and Link - Halo, Resident Evil, Madden, Gran Tourismo, Grand Theft Auto, Final Fantasy, etc.

Although Bod is 100% correct when it comes to the demographic targeting, I do think there is another issue at play ...

Most third party publishers and developers have a herd mentality, and they constantly chase someone else’s success. As a result of this they’re never as innovative or unique as the companies they’re following, and their games never receive the sales or the notoriety of the games they’re copying.

With the Wii Nintendo created a blank slate for anyone who wanted to could produce something new and unique; and Nintendo was quite successful at producing many new experiences for gamers. Unfortunately, most third party publishers don’t have a clue what to do with the Wii and would rather develop a Wii Sports, Wii Play or Wii Fit clone than to try something new.

exactly. I mean, imagine if a 3rd party actually went out and created a tank game that had solid controls. You could use 2 Wii remotes (or remote+nunchuck), one in each hand. Each hand controls 1 set of treads, you could then control the turret with one joystick/d-pad and then have lots of other buttons for weapons and other such things. Yet we still get stupid knockoffs of other games.

The Wii Remote+Nunchuck has opened up so many different genre's that did well in arcades but have done poorly on home consoles. (light gun shooters for example) if anyone made a decent game with unique and good controls it would take off due to word of mouth alone. Pinball Hall of Fame is a perfect example. It is slowly burning to a million seller (believe) and has extremely good ratings on sites like amazon.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

there are many reasons, including the one Bod made.

  • The Gamecube Stigma: very very few third party developers were successful on the GC and had better chances on PS2 and Xbox, specially in the west. Nintendo kept alive the system with their first and second party games mostly.
  • Birdmen developers and publishers: As Sean Malstron clearly described in his article in terms of software. ( article )

It's not just 3rd parties that can't compete with Ninty, neither Sony nor MS can in terms of game sales

21 of the top 25 selling games are published by Ninty (the sims, GTA * 2, GT fill the other 4 spots)

For the most part, I just think Third Parties are just using the Wii and DS to make a quick buck and support their other projects.  It is also what other people are saying.  That they don't know or want to make games based on the Wii model.  But that's no excuse.  You can make a perfectly good game on the Wii and it doesn't have to be like anything Nintendo is making or 'Waggle'  Mario Galaxy showed you can make an Action/Platformer with limited (or no) Waggle.  And you can Certainly make a full RPG or many other kinds of games with no Motion or pointer features at all.  A few third party games have come out like this and some good solid Third Party games are being made like this now and are coming soon (Little King Story, Oboro Muramasa Youtouden).  And frankly, the Wii is the most versitile system out there for perifierals and system add-ons, but Third Party alienation has pretty much killed that idea.  We should have seen 10 different Wii Zapper games by now, but we're only seeing ports and one original Resident Evil game.

So what it really comes down to is indavidual groups inside Third Parties want to work with more powerful graphics and 'not on Nintendo'.  They have said it time and time again, and so they put 80% of their development funds and manpower into PS3 and XBOX360.  Whereas 20% of those games will sell millions like they're all aiming for.  But as for Wii, this same group complains they can't sell anything on it, whereas they only put 10% of their effort into it.  And as such...they only get 10% of the profits out of it.

Why do they keep complaining that Nintendo gets 90% of the earnings off the Wii?  Maybe because they never put more than 10% into it from the beginning.  And continue to just stand 100 feet away pointing and complaining while Nintendo makes bank.
