Rumortoid: Nintendo 'bummed' that Kid Icarus Wii wasn't ready in 2008

Jonathan Holmes on Factor 5

Although I freaking love Animal Crossing: City Folk, I understand why a lot of people thought Nintendo's 2008 holiday line up was pretty weak. Compared to Q4 2007's releases of Metroid Prime 3 and Super Mario Galaxy, and Q4 2006's The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Q4 2008 on the Wii was the driest holiday yet for the little white shat-box.

Rumor has it that this dry spell wasn't always part of the plan. According to an inside source, Nintendo was originally planning to present Kid Icarus Wii at E3 2008, then release the game a few months later. Due to problems with Factor 5 (the developer long rumored to have ties to the project), that plan fell through, which left Nintendo of America feeling "pretty bummed." Kid Icarus Wii may still come together if Factor 5 can find someone to give them lots of money (hint: Nintendo has lots of money).

If the production art above (rumored to be leaked from Factor 5) is any indication, I'm not so sure that I mind that this project is on hold. Guys, it's Kid Icarus, not Generic Americ-anime Action Hero Icarus, or Tatooed Man with Muscles and Frowns Icarus. I've already got Kratos, Billy from Resident Evil Zero, and god know how many other videogame tough guys to meet my tattooed, frowning muscle-man needs. I think that some kids were never meant to grow up, and Pit from Kid Icarus is one of them.

The whole situation is BS and a rumor from Matt (who probably should be disciplined for such).

Think about it. The game was only said by IGN and they claimed it would be at E3. If artwork for the game made it's way onto the internet, it would have tried to be covered up. It wasn't. Also, this would be a core title (or a "hardcore" one). Why now release another Kid Icarus? E3 08 was also Nintendo reaching out to the expanded audience. The core games of E3 were not mentioned in the press conference, but were still on the show floor. It just doesn't smell right.

Truthfully, I doubt Nintendo will buy Factor 5. They don't share the "DNA." They are conservative, so I doubt Nintendo will bail them out.

does a gamer under the age of 25 even remember Kid Icarus?

I'm 23 and I remember it! ^^

Seriously though, there's not proof at all, but this is definitely a plausible scenario. Would certainly explain Nintendo's virtually non-existant lineup for the last few months of last year...

But what's their source?

I still say this game doesn't exist. Just because Pit was in Brawl doesn't mean anything (it certainly didn't help for Nana and Popo)

Nintendo still doomed?

Looking at that pic.....I think the only way to do it right would be to go (dare I say it) with cel-shading. It definitely worked for Wind-Waker....and it would help differentiate the game from the modern Zelda.

Wow, I can't believe some people still deny this game's existence.

Think about this Smashchu2, why would Matt Cassamasina lie about this game? What's his incentive? To get more hits for IGN, but they never even published stories about Kid Icarus. He only talked about it on the podcast.

These guys have actual inside sources, and I'm sure Cassamasina has friends that work at Factor 5. IGN never comments on a rumour until they get some sources to validate it. This is a pretty big thing to lie about, and then why would he stand by it for so long? I'm telling you bro, this game is in development.

The only problem is that with all the rumours about Factor 5 shutting down and what not, I don't know what the state of this game will be. They're gonna need some Nintendo help.

# of games above 75 on Metacritic (including downloadable):

360: 241     DS: 144

PS3: 152     PSP: 126

Wii: 85

Ya know I was saying after E3 that they ended surprisingly early for their time allotted. Usually companies don't end with time left over. I mean they pay for all that time on the stage and usually they use it all up. Nintendo ended about 10-15 mins early so obviously something was pulled or extracted at the last minute. Could have been Kid Icarus but I won't speculate further.

Then of course the thing with Factor 5 has never been confirmed except we know they've gone silent. That only happens when they are shutting down are going through some major transitions and they don't want the public to know about it yet because obviously rumors, usually negative which we've seen, will be spread.

I hate speculating so I want but there's obviously more that meets the eye than what we know.
