That flies in the face of what would be more profitable for Sony. They can much easier make a profit on software than on hardware (unless they don't cut prices in which case they may not sell enough). Software is almost the only thing they make a profit on right now (accessories too).

They should definitely try to get out all of those (well the 1st party ones) during this year. That would get them some much needed cash.

like GTA expect GT5 to bring huge revenue, sony may even post a profit out of it.

I'm predicting the gaming division to be better off than the other divisions come Jan. 29. We'll see that day.

IMO the PS3 won't be discontinued because it's too integral to the success of Blu-ray.

@vthokiesrmoo: No matter how you want to classify them, the market disagrees and the market is the one that decides whether to buy the system for the game or not.

I'm not sure what you try to point out with the sales, that it has no games or that despite it having the games, it still got a beating?

I do agree that the price difference doesn't matter if people really want the system, but as you pointed out yourself, the system isn't desirable enough to be chosen over the competition.

The future games is really a moot point, actually it's turned as a joke already. Besides, everything with "2" (or more) in it and a prequel already on the system, isn't going to sell systems. So basically you had GT5 (although Prologue is out) and God of War 3, that are potential system sellers.

Wii is going to end up similar novelty as DS. Novelty factor on both have already worn off.

So, which one is it; can or can't you predict the future from the past? You can't say that "you can find trends" and "you can't predict the future sales" at the same time. If you can't, doesn't mean that others can't. Besides, where did you base the games you mentioned being as system sellers? Were you just pulling them out of your ass or what?

In case you haven't yet noticed, tech isn't selling systems, so there goes your 3D. Besides, there are other applications too for the 3D evinronments, such as head tracking.

Yes the market is the only determining factor for the success or failure of products.

The main reason for listing the sales is I'm posting on a thread named "Why I think the PS3 won't be discontinued, and why I may be wrong" when if you compare the sales of the 2 HD consoles since BOTH have been out they are neck and neck. If Sony isn't talking about discontinuing their console, then why are we?

I also guarantee that more than 2 of the games I named will be good enough to sway people towards owning a PS3.

The past 2 years people in the market for games have decided against the PS3 because of everything they heard bad about it. It's online sucks, 3rd party games are better on 360. Back when Rainbow Six Vegas, Gears of War, and Halo 3 just came out who didn't want a 360 over a PS3? I know I did.

I owned a 360 since launch and sold it in June for a PS3 because imo I see where this console race is going. Once i played COD4 on my friends PS3 and saw that a good developer can make the 3rd party games just as good on PS3 I was instantly sold. That night I went home, packed my 360 up and sold it to a guy at my work within the week. MGS4 was also coming out a week or so later, so that might have played a little into my decision.

I can't own a console without good online play, especially a good FPS. Thats why I sold my PS2 last generation and got the Xbox (ironic, huh?). I had Xbox LIVE since the days of Unreal Tournament. My friend and I were the first people i knew to ever have Xbox LIVE. I'll tell you right now as someone who has owned LIVE since I was in 9th grade (now I'm 22), that PSN is just as good as LIVE, imo because of the games that are on Sony's console and bc its free, ITS BETTER. In Warhawk you can turn your PS3 into a dedicated server to constantly host games for your clan or the public if you like. KZ2 is going to redefine the PSN experience. 32 player multiplayer with amazing graphics, a calendar system integrated where you can set up clan matches in game on your calendar. Honestly, how cool is that? COD 4 runs the exact same on PSN as it does on LIVE. Sure, you can't send a voice message to someone (I think), and there isn't party chat on it (yet), but i get around these problems by connecting my bluetooth wireless keyboard to my ps3 and sending messages to my friends online until we're in a game, then i use my jawbone as my headset. On another note, one of my biggest positives for me selling my 360 for my PS3 is that it is whisper quiet. I'll turn it on to download a demo and then watch tv while its downloading and totally forget its running and remember like 30 minutes later. It reeks of Japanese quality.

I got off topic, but my main point is now that 3rd party games are the same on the PS3 and 360, the online is very satisfying on both consoles, and you get Sony exclusives with the PS3, I really don't think people will continue to choose the 360 over the PS3 as they have earlier in the generation. The biggest thing going for Microsoft in its US market is everyone in the US has their console and people want to play with their friends, so that definitely sells consoles. As for Microsoft vs Sony in the rest of the world, mark my words, Sony will be leading Microsoft in sales by the end of 09 in Europe, the UK, and Australia (I know they are leading MS in Japan, I'm not sure but they may already be leading in Australia but i dont feel like looking up the numbers). Of course, I say that prediction with no handicap for the 360 being on the market a year longer than the PS3, as most 360 lovers/PS3 Haters dont seem to weigh that into their evaluation of sales.

To finish, like I said you can find trends by looking into the past at numbers, but these trends can't predict the volatility of the market, and certainly doesn't predict factors like people changing their minds about what they think about a product. Game consoles are kind of different than most products in the market in the fact that consoles depend massively on their complementary products, games, to sell systems. So far the PS3's biggest downfall has been the negativity that has been swirling around it since day 1. With the games coming out exclusively for it and 3rd party games looking the same on it as with the 360 i think peoples minds will start to change.

They have been pretty even since PS3 launch, but looking at the latest trends, 360 has been pulling a gap. But, the topic isn't about competition, it is about Sonys financial situation.

Even if PS3 would be discontinued, Sony would keep quiet about it. Even Sega was very quiet about Dreamcast until they had to speak out.

Outside GT5, the exclusives you mentioned aren't likely system sellers. God Of War had the sales of 3 and 2,5 million (on PSP 1,5). Surely a spike may be seen during the launch week, but that's just about it. Sequels that have a predecessor on a same console, don't turn out as system sellers.

The trends do show pretty accurately what happens. Of course, the change in value or a new innovative game may change the previous set, although, even then the trends show what happens. Also, what happens in the market and financial world is setting limitations to what the companies are able to do, when the change in value or the new innovative game may be out of the question.

Id say a very good amount of people have wireless internet in their house or just can't have their console near their modem for comfort reasons. I'm not gona bs an estimate, but i mean c'mon A LOT of people have a router.

Im sure you know the prices, but for what you get with a PS3, and to have the same, pretty much basic functions of a 360 your paying very comparable prices. Throw in a year of LIVE on top of that and WALA, a $450 dollar Xbox 360 60 gig with a dvd drive vs a $400 PS3 with blu-ray.
