Why I think the PS3 won't be discontinued (and why I may be wrong)

Yes the market is the only determining factor for the success or failure of products.

The main reason for listing the sales is I'm posting on a thread named "Why I think the PS3 won't be discontinued, and why I may be wrong" when if you compare the sales of the 2 HD consoles since BOTH have been out they are neck and neck. If Sony isn't talking about discontinuing their console, then why are we?

I also guarantee that more than 2 of the games I named will be good enough to sway people towards owning a PS3.

The past 2 years people in the market for games have decided against the PS3 because of everything they heard bad about it. It's online sucks, 3rd party games are better on 360. Back when Rainbow Six Vegas, Gears of War, and Halo 3 just came out who didn't want a 360 over a PS3? I know I did.

I owned a 360 since launch and sold it in June for a PS3 because imo I see where this console race is going. Once i played COD4 on my friends PS3 and saw that a good developer can make the 3rd party games just as good on PS3 I was instantly sold. That night I went home, packed my 360 up and sold it to a guy at my work within the week. MGS4 was also coming out a week or so later, so that might have played a little into my decision.

I can't own a console without good online play, especially a good FPS. Thats why I sold my PS2 last generation and got the Xbox (ironic, huh?). I had Xbox LIVE since the days of Unreal Tournament. My friend and I were the first people i knew to ever have Xbox LIVE. I'll tell you right now as someone who has owned LIVE since I was in 9th grade (now I'm 22), that PSN is just as good as LIVE, imo because of the games that are on Sony's console and bc its free, ITS BETTER. In Warhawk you can turn your PS3 into a dedicated server to constantly host games for your clan or the public if you like. KZ2 is going to redefine the PSN experience. 32 player multiplayer with amazing graphics, a calendar system integrated where you can set up clan matches in game on your calendar. Honestly, how cool is that? COD 4 runs the exact same on PSN as it does on LIVE. Sure, you can't send a voice message to someone (I think), and there isn't party chat on it (yet), but i get around these problems by connecting my bluetooth wireless keyboard to my ps3 and sending messages to my friends online until we're in a game, then i use my jawbone as my headset. On another note, one of my biggest positives for me selling my 360 for my PS3 is that it is whisper quiet. I'll turn it on to download a demo and then watch tv while its downloading and totally forget its running and remember like 30 minutes later. It reeks of Japanese quality.

I got off topic, but my main point is now that 3rd party games are the same on the PS3 and 360, the online is very satisfying on both consoles, and you get Sony exclusives with the PS3, I really don't think people will continue to choose the 360 over the PS3 as they have earlier in the generation. The biggest thing going for Microsoft in its US market is everyone in the US has their console and people want to play with their friends, so that definitely sells consoles. As for Microsoft vs Sony in the rest of the world, mark my words, Sony will be leading Microsoft in sales by the end of 09 in Europe, the UK, and Australia (I know they are leading MS in Japan, I'm not sure but they may already be leading in Australia but i dont feel like looking up the numbers). Of course, I say that prediction with no handicap for the 360 being on the market a year longer than the PS3, as most 360 lovers/PS3 Haters dont seem to weigh that into their evaluation of sales.

To finish, like I said you can find trends by looking into the past at numbers, but these trends can't predict the volatility of the market, and certainly doesn't predict factors like people changing their minds about what they think about a product. Game consoles are kind of different than most products in the market in the fact that consoles depend massively on their complementary products, games, to sell systems. So far the PS3's biggest downfall has been the negativity that has been swirling around it since day 1. With the games coming out exclusively for it and 3rd party games looking the same on it as with the 360 i think peoples minds will start to change.
